Potato Salad Kickstarter
« on: July 11, 2014, 07:58:35 am »
Zack Danger Brown has created a Kickstarter page to raise enough money to make potato salad. His goal was $10, but has received over $46,411 in donations. Have you heard about this?

Kickstarter is a crowdfunding website that lets people donate money to help fund other people's projects.

Yeah, the people that gave money to this joker for such foolery are complete IDIOTS...I bet if there was someone truly in need, they wouldn't give them a penny. I find this whole thing neither cute nor funny.

That's sad because of things like this people would hesitate to give.

I saw this on CNBC.  They interviewed the guy and he said his plan is to make the potato salad and ship some to each of the donors, then donate the rest of the money collected to charity.

Kind of makes you wonder if someone was to start a campaign to get donations to go to college, would people donate the money so they could do that.

I recall reading in the paper years ago (pre-internet) how one recent high school graduate put ads in the classifieds asking people to send him a penny so he could go to college.  He reported he collected nearly $1 million in donations using that method.  He was curious what would happen and was surprised that he was able to go to college and donated the rest to charity.

My son used Kickstart to get enough money to publish the first CD for his band.

My son used Kickstart to get enough money to publish the first CD for his band.

I think that this is what kickstarter is more about; giving a person the capital to start a major project like creating a CD for a start-up band. With that initial investment, the band will (hopefully) be able to sell those CDs at their gigs thereby allowing them to reinvest those profits in a new CD later down the road. However asking for money to make a potato salad with no plans to make this into a business I think goes against the spirit of the kickstarter program.

That being said, people can invest in whatever tickles their fancy. So if people read about the potato salad kickstart project and still thought that it was worthwhile to donate, so be it. It's like those people that would sell something stupid on EBay, and people would actually buy that stupid item.

Yeah I heard of that. I thought it was a bit ridiculous to use it for potato salad but will do what they want with their money. Although it's nice of him to donate the rest to charity.
