I have elevated cholesterol although it is not high enough to be put on medication. I bought a book written by the American heart association which makes a few recommendations. The biggest recommendation that made a difference for me was cutting down on eggs. There is enough cholesterol in one egg that that would be your daily intake right there, without even eating anything else. Also red meats are relatively high in cholesterol. It should be noted however that there are good nutrients in both eggs and red mead so don't cut them out completely, just limit them to say 1 or 2 eggs per week and 2 or 3 portions of red meat per week. Ice cream, full fat milk and butter are high in cholesterol so you need to change to frozen yogurt, fat free milk and a light margerine (first ingredient should be water). Also, whilst salt does not directly influence your cholesterol, it can put your blood pressure up which is another complication for your heart. I have adjusted my diet in this way for the last 12 months and my cholesterol has changed from the "high" category, to the "borderline-high" category. Hopefully by next year, I will be in the "normal" category. Hope this helps!
