My second son didn't talk until he was four and I found out that his brother was talking for him so he had no need to say anything. but one day he got mad at me and spoke quite clear because his brother wasn't around.

lol.

I am a grandmother of four girls and they all started talking before 2 years old.  Some talk more than the others and some less, my latest one talks all the time, even if we don't quite understand her.  I would ask  her Doctor because she should be saying something, even if it is just DaDa or Mama, no and yes because they are suppose to be talking at this age, I know I would be worried.

She will be 2 next month and she isn't talking yet. If you have grandkids or little ones, how old were they when they started talking?...I'm beginning to worry  :(...we know that she is not Autistic :dontknow:

My kids were both talking by the time they were 11 months old but, this doesn't mean that ALL children will do the same.  My daughter took FOREVER to start walking.  She didn't walk 'til she was 18 months old!  Yes, I started to worry, too, and just before I made an appointment with the Pediatrician, I guess she decided she was ready to be more mobile.

Just a suggestion but, have you had your Granddaughter's hearing checked?  Sometimes children have problems that not even we notice.  Give her a DIY test.  Step far enough away from her and call her name a few times.  Does she respond to you?  Does she turn her head towards you and your voice?  If she can't hear at all, or not enough to make out what you're saying clearly, this could be a reason why she doesn't speak yet.  Then again... I have a nephew who did the same thing.  He didn't speak, either.  We know he heard us because he'd smile like the Cheshire Cat but, he didn't speak until HE was ready to.  He was a little over 2 years old when he decided it was time.  All in all, it doesn't hurt to do that DIY test I told you about.

My mum often tells the story of my uncle who didn't say a word until he was 4 years old. In those days, we didn't have all the tools at our disposal to diagnose him with anything, so they just carried on, encouraging him and eventually at 4 years old, he started talking. He is now 80 years old having had an immense career in SALES over the years. He truly has the gift of the gab, is as funny as anybody I know - so you should not worry. Whilst there are 'norms' for everything, these are only a guideline and every child is different. Also for the record, my sisters son did not even start to walk until he was older than two - he just sat on his backside watching all the other kids. Now, he's 10 and nearly a black belt in Tae Kwon Do! So perhaps your grandchild will be a politician or something!!??  ;D

I wouldn't worry too much.  I have a nephew who didn't talk till he was almost 4.   They tested him, not autistic.  He learned sign language.  Now he is in 5th grade, gets straight 'A's & has been tested to be of high iq.   He did go to speech classes though when he was younger, they are paid by the state if you don't have insurance, he still didn't talk - they taught him the sign language, but eventually it just all started clicking for him.   All kids are different & develop different.    :monkey:

I think my son was closer to three. I would worry to much, before you know it she will be talking a million miles an hour and you wont get her to stop.

Does she have siblings?  Maybe she doesn't get a chance to talk.
Have a wonderful day!

If you are really concerned, you should talk to her Pediatrician about it...it's probably nothing at all, she just a lil girl and you know how we can be.....

Has she had any hearing tests done? I've heard of a few children who did not start speaking unitl they were 4! I wouldn't worry too much, but it wouldn't hurt to get some tests done.

i have a son, and a daughter, born 14 months apart.  the boy s older..i tried to potty train him at 2, didn't work, so when my daughter turned 2 i trained them together..he also didn't start talking until he was 3, about the same time my daughter started talking..he would say mommy and some other small words, so i had the doctor check his heaing and it was fine, so he doctor told me that some little ones take longer to communicate then others..i wouldn't worry until she got up to 3 yrs old
