Do certain types of music make people depressed, violent, etc?

All I can say on a personal level is that music can make a bad day better and the wrong music can ruin a good day as well. I was taken out to dinner once and we ended up at the House of Blues, I tell you before the meal was over I was in the mood to kill something! Man I hate the blues.

I personally DO listen to rap but I stay away from any of the violently filled artists, i only listen to artists such as lecrae trip lee and andy mineo as far as rap goes but im also not stuck on rap, i do listen to other genres aswell such as country and rock (and a tadly bit of classical

Well, I definitely feel like music is powerful enough to affect your mood, I have felt that myself when listening to certain songs. However, I have enough sense to not take it literally and do something stupid based off of it.

Music has a lot of power. I have to admit I never listen to rap any longer than I have to and turn it off quickly, but what I have heard is always  filled with hate and violence, same with heavy metal.

Music can definitely affect people. Personally, I judge people's personalities by their taste in music because that says so much about them. Music can make people act completely idiotic, give people the idea that doing something wrong is actually cool/okay, and just be completely offensive sometimes. Depending on what you listen to, though, music can also save lives. It definitely has some power.

I remember that a long time ago scientific studies were done on the effects of certain types of music.  The conclusion I recall the most clearly was that classical music enhanced a person's ability to learn.

Music can affect someone's mood, but I do not believe that it can create an impulse or an ability that isn't already there.

I agree with those like jford87 that say music can affect a person's mood, but not to the point that it causes a person to do something that they already wouldn't do or go against the values that you grew up with.

I also don't subscribe to the idea that a particular genre -- like rap or heavy metal as mentioned above -- are always laden with hate and/or violence. Particular bands will perhaps have a tendency to write such lyrics, but that doesn't mean that all groups singing a particular genre do as well. For example, both Creed and Skillet are heavy metal bands that are also considered Christian rock.
