Forum Moderators
« on: March 12, 2014, 08:17:32 am »
I was thinking that it might be nice to designate certain members as forum Moderators... Those that have posted numerous posts and really know the rules of the forum. I sometimes see people (esp. newbies) either breaking a rule (like the post today that included a referral link to a different site) or else the posts are in the wrong category (eg some "fluff" post in the Debate and Discussion sub-forum, some word game in the regular Off Topic forum, site suggestions in the Contest and Promo forum, etc.). I think it would be nice for the forum readers if things were correctly organized and it'd take away some of the burden off of the Admin if there were a few moderators to monitor the forum.

Great idea!  One little thing that gets on my nerves is coming into the Forums and finding multiple threads on the same thing.  That can be frustrating to me when I am trying to find good threads to get in my 30 sometimes.

To me Assigning Forum Moderators Can have both Negative And Positive  Impacts...

The Postive would be.. The the site moderators might have A little less work off their back.. But on the other hand it might cause them more work having to also not only watch the forum but watching the Forum Moderators they left in control carefully. Another Positive would be Maybe The Forums Would be a little cleaner and a little calmer and some things may get handled faster than a site moderator because they do have so much work to do with the site and the forums and also support tickets etc...

Some of the negatives could be.. Maybe A forum Moderater would Abuse their privelage they have recieved.. Afterall. We don't really know the people besides talking to them on a forum. We have no idea how people really act and react to certain things..It could cause alot of stress and alot of damage..  Another thing would be Maybe someone putting their own confrontations in front of their Privelage and taking matters into their own hands.. For example..person a and person b are having an arguement... But person A is a forum moderator and decides to take matters into their own hands and get rid of person B..
A few other issues is.. Fairness... You would probably have people complaining that they would be a better moderator.. and why wasn't they chosen.. You know. Jealous behaviors of who was chosen and who wasn't. In all reality.. I think the site is being ran fairly and should stay that way.. If they decide to go for this idea. I will open it with welcome arms.. If they decide to go against this idea.. Maybe they could put it into consideration to hire extra help just for the forum..

I like the idea but I've noticed sometimes when people get power they act differently then they appear to be. IN other words some get cocky , arrogent and power trippy. It's a nice idea but idk if its the right fit for these board's considering the person could have a bad day and be abusive with the powers he or shes given in one way or another. If you can find someone you trust who wont do that it's another story but as minion pointed out we don't really know the persons on this site really.  The way they talk in the forum could just be one way they talk to people who know's what they are like in real life. It's a big risk just choosing someone to do it and a big task for the owner of the site to assign someone to do it.

Admin has previously stated they wouldn't let members be moderators because it would turn into a popularity contest

There was actually a person last year that was very successful and left the site because she couldn't become a moderator .

I think it's best to just leave it to admin

I think I know who you're talking about, and yes, the Admin has stated that forum mods will not be something that us as posters can apply to be.  The most we can do is report a post that is in the wrong place.

I would rather stay the way it is. You don't have to respond to everything. If it I.terests me I respond if not I skip it

We could also not respond to posts that are in the wrong forum.

Some things posted on the wrong board are actually questions that need to be answered from new members who don't know better. I do just ignore some posts from people I know constantly post on the wrong board or just post random things that don't really make sense

Even though they don't make members forum moderators (which I agree with) FC does designate certain members as "Helpful Contributors" which is a nice way to acknowledge that some members are a great source of info and dedicated to helping others. Off the top of my head two Helpful Contributors are OldBuddy and WSNYYANKEES.

I agree forum moderators on FC would be useless because of jealousy and competition. Some people don't like to see someone else's name in the spotlight more than their own and the person who is chosen as the forum moderator would probably get hassled or it would be constant complaints about its not fair to have one person chosen as the moderator....... yada yada yada

I like the above responses to your posts.  In a way, we each are Forum moderators.  The admin has given us ways to report negative, derogatory, disrespectful, or hurtful posts.  Where you are very correct, though, is that there is no way to control posting in the wrong Forum and multiple repetitive threads on the same topic in different places.  The only thing I have noticed about that is that Admin does do a good cleanup a couple of times a year.  Thanks for a thoughtful suggestion, though.
