Does anyone have fruit trees?
« on: March 09, 2014, 08:37:36 am »
Here we are in the second week of march and still freezing temps at night.  Does anyone have fruit trees in the northern climates and if so, can you tell me when you spray your trees?  I know it has to be done (dormant oil) before the buds form but not sure if I can do this while temps at night are below freezing.  Daytime is in the 50's so the buds will break soon.  ANy advice?

We used to have a apple tree in our backyard but it got diseased, so we had to cut it down.  :(

I don't have any fruit trees but if you need help as to when to spray I'm sure if you google or do a search you might find the answer as to when to spray before the trees buds pop open.

I have an apple tree and I live in Ohio, but I don't know where to spray trees.  I would think that you should spray the branches, but I'm not positive.

I have raspberries, figs, and blueberries.  I don't spray them at all.

We don't have fruit trees where I live.  I know nothing about spraying trees, but I do recall when I was growing up that we had plum trees that we lost in a fire.  I could walk up the street and get all the apricots that I wanted.  I could go to the railroad tracks and pick all the berries I wanted.  Have you tried Googling about spraying trees?  Good luck.   :rainbow:

We used to have apple, pear, cherry, black cherry and mulberry trees. They are all gone now and the only thing we
have left are walnut trees. :-\

I have a fig tree in my yard but I struggle to get any of them because of the squirrels.  I planted a some muscadine grape vines in my yard recently and hope they will produce grapes next year or the following.

Our fruit trees haven't started budding out yet so I don't think we have much to worry about here as far as crops freezing.  Hopefully, the cold, freezing weather will soon be behind us.
Have a wonderful day!

I've thought about planting some fruit trees, but presently have none.  I'm thinking I may plan a grape vine first and see how that goes before attempting trees (plus I'd need to figure out where to put the trees.

As far as spraying, there are probably forums online specific to maintaining fruit trees that could provide you some of the information you are seeking.  I know I'm hoping to try tapping my maple tree to see if I could make some syurp, and have been searching maple sugaring forums for information on when to tap the tree.

If it helps, in the maple sugaring field, things seem to be getting a later start than usual due to the long, cold winter.  Could be spraying trees will also be delayed for the same reason.
