$10.10 Min. Wage Thoughts
« on: February 19, 2014, 09:23:21 pm »
President Obama want to raise the federal min. wage to $10.10 per hour.  What's your thoughts on his plan to raise min. wage?  Is it a good idea for a Economy in a critical point in US History?

My thought is.. If the cost of living steadily increases your pay should increase.. So i think it's fair to raise it.. but with obama there is always a catch you see.. So i don't know if that's a good thing or not.. But it would sure help alot of people out even by the slightest bit of money... An extra dollar is an extra dollar when you get it you don't complain you embrace.. but as stated it probably will not come without a price.. We will just have to see how it plays out

I believe the minimum wage should be higher. And there should be a cost of living increase built into it.

I think that the minimum wage should have been raised a lot higher than it was in 1980, when I earned $3.10 an hour.  I earned $3.35 an hour in 1981.  I see it as a thing that it could not hurt to get a few extra dollars.  Right now, the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.  For people who are making $35,000 to $40,000 a year they can survive, but when you have more than one child, it is hard to live on that.  Yes, I think $10.10 per hour is a good idea. :moneymouth: :moneymouth: :moneymouth:  :rainbow:

I think that if thre only job that a person has is paying ten dollars and ten cents an hour it would be nearly impossible to live on your own. This equates to seventeen hundred and sixty dollars a month or fifteen hundred after taxes. The average health insurance seems to be at about three hundred dollars a month and rent seems to hover around seven hundred and fifty dollars a month. Even if you lived within walking distance of work and didn't have any transportation costs...  Four hundred and fifty dollars a month left for food, retirement, utilities, clothes, haircuts, entertainment doesn't really cut it. You would most likely need to have a second job which takes away from your quality of life.

It is an absolutely terrible idea to put inflationary pressures on the economy esp. when it is already difficult for people to find work. If you force a company to pay a higher wage without an increase in productivity of that person, then the company will find other means to account for that cost be it in higher prices, decrease in hours (esp. to decrease a person's amount of employment from full-time to part-time), a decrease in the number of jobs, or even a company closing its doors putting everyone in that company out of work.  :bad:

It is only for FEDERAL CONTRACTED WORKERS.  It does not have an impact on the flunky regular joe working fast food or retail.

Most people seem to have NO clue what was actually passed.  He did not increase the minimum wage.  The increase is ONLY for FEDERAL CONTRACTED WORKERS so the actual minimum wage remains at $7.25 an hour.  I agree you cannot live on that but forcing companies to pay in excess of $10 an hour for a flunky with NO skills that half @ss does their job will no solve anything.  Companies will hire less employees and the cost of EVERYTHING will increase because the company will make money.  If they have to pay more money out for workers they will increase the price they sell their product for.

It will hurt the small business owner if minimum wage is that high. They are trying to make a living as well.

I think that the cost of living in most places does not allow people to be able to live on minimum wage. If the minimum wage does increase, it needs to be an incremental change.

I think it would be good to increase it, especially since prices are going up, but I don't know if $10.10 is the right number. It can create a cycle and reduce the amount of jobs available.....

Yes it should be that much.My son worked a mc donalds he quit recently and is looking for something better.I know a gal he worked with had two kids and because her wages were so low was able to get food stamps.I suppose if she made just 2.00 more an hour it would help alot.

i beleive the wage should be raised, but to force companies to pay that high a price..at least ones that are small business owners would probably put them out of business.  billion dollar a year companies, like mcdonalds, pepsi, etc would use this as an excuse to jack their prices to an outrageous price.  do you want to pay $10 for a single meal at mcdonalds? and lets face it..we've all worked with people who weren't worth 5 dollars an hour, let alone 10. i think 8.50 would be a good minimum wage.  just my opinion ???

There should be NO minimum wage at all! No one stays in a job for long at starting pay, they are either let go or given a raise. The minimum wage is strictly a political football. A job has a certain value to the one offering it, a pay rate has to be set by the market place of labor or it will not be filled.
