IMPORTANT: SHOULD READ and do not ignore this message without SHARING to the other. On Sunday a family went to picnic with a few drinks tin. Monday, two family members admitted to hospital and placed in the Intensive Care Unit space. He died on Wednesday, Autopsy results concluded it hit Leptospirosis. The virus is stuck to the tin cans are drunk, without the use of glasses / cups. Test results showed that tin was infected mice that had dried urine containing Leptospira. Highly recommended to rinse the parts evenly on all soda cans before drinking it. Cans are usually stored in the warehouse and delivered direct to retail stores without cleaning. A study shows that the top of all beverage cans more contaminated than public toilets (full of germs and bacteria.)So, clean it with water before putting mouth in order to avoid all accidents total. SO...BE CAREFUL FRIENDS.... Please SHARE This message to your Loved Ones..!!

Thanks for the share of information - wow that is gross.  I heard before that you should wash all cans even cans of vegetables, soup whatever prior to opening because there is bacteria on the tops of all cans.  I never do but I am sure it would be a good idea.   :sad1:

Thank you for sharing. That is really gross. I don't drink from a can (I heard years ago someone drank from a can and found a mouse inside after he was finished),  I don't know if that was true or not, but ever since then I pour into a glass, and after your post will continue!

It is very shocking indeed to get this type of news.  I mostly drink from cups or glasses.  I have never heard of Leptospirosis before now.  Thanks for the info.

Although it's typically a good idea to wipe off the tops of cans/bottles you drink from, if for no other reason to protect yourself from whatever virus/bacteria was left behind by other humans that were handling it, the above paragraph is part of a known scare email campaign whose origins dates as far back as 1998.

If you wish to read up on the background of the email source and information from the CDC regarding earlier versions of the email, you can find one such summary here at snopes:

http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/raturine.asp

Whenever one receives an alarming email such as this, it's always a good idea to fact check it against sites like snopes or urban legends before passing it on.  The email may contain some truth to it, but the real intention of the email is to imply/instill a greater than necessary fear in the reader and spread disinformation.

As the old school house rock would remind us: Knowledge is power.   ;)

Yikes i am so glad that i don't drink soda pop ar anything else from metal cans. I don't like the taste of soda pop and as far as fruit drinks they have a slight taste of metal so don't drink them either. Tep i do was off the cans of vegatables and fruits. But i don't go as far as i ex-sister-in-law. She washes every thing with lysol. Veggies, fruits and everything. I find it a little gross.

OMG talk about paranoia! I have been drinking from cans for over 60 years with no problem and doubt if I am going to stop any time soon.

I don't believe this.  It's been going around the internet for years.  Of course everyone has a right to their opinion and thoughts.  But for me...I don't believe it is true.

MythBusters also did an episode on this (Season 7 Ep. 22: "Hidden Nasties") (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters_%282009_season%29#Rat_Pee_Soda). They also concluded that this is just a myth. While it is possible that rats could urinate on the tops of soda cans, they conducted a study using cans they found around San Fransisco, had them analyzed by Stanford, and found that few had any urine on them. Furthermore, the professor at Stanford stated that the deadly pathogens wouldn't be able to survive in dried urine for any real length of time, and would most likely be fully digested in the stomach before it ever entered the bloodstream to cause an infection.

Snopes and Urban Legends also mention that most cans stored in warehouses are in cartons and are usually wrapped in plastic, so even the possibility of a can being contaminated with urine is highly unlikely. So if there is any contamination, it would occur at a person's home, after they have opened up the carton.

I've seen this for quite a while, but was disturbed when I saw this story getting spread around on Facebook... I kept commenting on those posts linking to Snopes to help curb this disinformation. I still don't understand why so many people seem skeptical about what an actual scientist would say, yet readily believe something that gets passed to them on Facebook or some other on-line medium. It's like that State Farm ad where a woman and her neighbor are talking and she claims that there is a law that everything on-line must be true, and she found this out from on the internet!

A lot of the stuff on Facebook really gets on my nerves.  People will believe anything and share anything.  I made a friend mad because she had shared2 different pictures of 2 different kids who were dead but she shared a "missing" poster of them.  I sent her a message the 2nd time with a link to the parents Facebook begging people to stop sharing a missing kid status and let them grieve.  She, the friend, doesn't talk to me anymore. lol

I heard about this happening to people many years ago.  Never knew if it was true or not but anything is possible.  I always clean the tops of my cans and use a straw and have done so for many years now.
Have a wonderful day!

I have started to rinse my cans before opening and drinking. I guess I should find a water fountain by the vending machine and rinse it off before drinking. Good thing to know. Thanks for the gory update.
