Is a Bucket-List Really Necessary?

You know a 'bucket-list' is "a list of things one would like to do before one dies."

I don't think it's "necessary," but 'bucket-list' is a good label for one to categorize 'things one-does not have to do but -would like to be able to say they did once.' (I thought of adding 'truthfully' in there, but  thought better of it)

We have various 'to do'-lists in life: there's the 'schooling'-list: go to school, get a job, go to more school, get a better job (whatever keeps you 'swimming in formation');

Then there's the 'education'-list (or the enlightened 'education'-list) which one makes when one has stepped back & seen what 'schooling' is for: sort of a business-plan, I guess; when one sets about "educing" (taking-in what is given & formulating it to create something new).

I think I'm working through an 'education'-list with some strange materials: mixing the schooling 'they' call "education" with the experience of death-by-brain-injury & 'life anyway' (i.e. using the med-industry as little as possible, living on charity & a menial settlement from the man who killed me). And it looks like that list is going to end (the way I imagine the 'schooling'- & the other 'education'-lists end) with the entry of ... something peaceful-ish, like 'making-do forever.'

(Or is that 'making-due'?... "The Gambler, he broke-even" ... I forget )

A bucket-list is for someone who believes in death ... I think I'd rather call it a 'once in a lifetime'-list ("lifetime" being relative ... for some, it's 'all the time you have'; for me & others, it's 'an entire phase in your life, one which you can't tell how you got here-from').

I say: Treat a 'bucket list' like you treat the receipt from a fast-food joint (when you don't have to 'count' it as a business-expense) ... look at it (keeping it if you think you can use it ... sometimes they put coupons or online-surveys on those) & throw it away when you're finished with it.

(And tell the grandkids-etc. that you've done ALL THAT STUFF
 whether you have or not ... the imagination far out-does real
-life anyway!)

Bucket-lists always make me think of people giving up.  Any story I've heard in reference to bucket-lists is of a person who has been told they have some illness that's incurable so they all of a sudden get this idea in there head that they need to fit a lifetime of dreams, tasks and even wishes.  Nay, I don't think they are necessary - I think if you work hard for your goals when the time comes what was important to you may already had been lived out.  We'll see if I feel the same if I'm ever told I have only X amount of time left.... ultimately that's not for me or anyone else to decide though.

It's no more necessary than crossword puzzles. It's just something people do to inspire themselves to live another day or year. Gives them something to live for I guess.

Is that 'things you wanted to do before you got out of high-school'?

Makes me wonder how they thought of 'kicking the bucket' ... maybe because that's one of the ways people hanged themselves?

Buckets list are for people who screwed their lives up and never really did anything in their whole life. They think
that when they retire, they can squeeze in everything before they die. What I am saying, think ahead you can't have
everything.

o Touch a Tiger
o Drive a convertible with the top down and music blaring
o Adopt an accent for an entire day.
o Take a long road trip with friends
o Climb a tall tree all the way to the top
o Put on and act in a stage performance
o Write my own play.
o See the northern lights.
o Fast (intake nothing but water) for 72 hours
o Be on TV
o Connect with all your teachers from your past schools – college, high school, junior high, all of it. Let them know how they have shaped your life.
o Climb a mountain
o Experience sunset and sunrise
o Start a social movement on a cause you believe in
o Bury the hatchet with all the enemies / people you had conflict with in the past or now
o Do something completely crazy and out of character
o Fly first class
o See the Mona Lisa in Louvre (Paris)
o Swim with sharks
o Go to Jamaica and eat a coconut with a Jamaican with an accent and sing with a Eulalie
o Get eyebrow pierced
o Bake a bagel from scratch

I don't see anything wrong with the term bucket list.  I haven't officially written out a bucket list, but I've made a few mental ones.  I don't think there's anything wrong with having one, it's just another way to dream about things you'd like to do, whether it be in the near or distant future.

I wrote down things that I would like to do in my life but I wouldn't necessarily call it a bucket list. It was more pleasure / leisurely things than anything.

After losing my husband to cancer, I wish he had a bucket-list. We did not get to do many things together before he passed. I will make that different with myself. If I know that I am dying, I will definitely be doing things until I drop dead. Hospitals just keep you hanging on to false hope and spending you money with them. That time should be left up to you how you want to spend it. Mine won't be in a hospital!

I personally believe that everyone has a list of things they plan to do before they leave this world.  I have a list of things I have always wanted to do, but calling it a bucket list is a reminder of what I want to do.  Earning a degree is one thing I wanted to do.  I have completed it, although I owe the school now.  I want to see my degrees in hand, so finding a job is paramount.
