« on: January 13, 2014, 07:29:09 am »
over the weekend, we had two stray cats wander onto out property.
They parked themselves in the middle of our parking lot.
one scratched a couple people.
we were told that we have to capture them in order to bring them into the local animal shelter.

Maybe they belong to someone that lives nearby or maybe they are hungry. I feed some of the stray cats that I see in my neighborhood.  Give them the strength to more on...lol.  Feral cats are hard to catch.  If you do catch they you should take them to the Humane Society or a non-kill shelter.  Regular animal shelters kill the cat they cannot find a home for in a very inhumane way.  :(

People  take the time  to have your pets  spade it will help us all.  Where I live, we  have way to many strays.

These cats that appear "stray" to you and others just may belong to someone close by, OR, they may have been DUMPED by someone who owned them before.  I have to tell you that if they are true Feral Cats, no one will be able to get close enough to them to get scratched.  As far as a no-kill shelter is concerned, there are those out there that claim they don't put them down, like the Humane Society, but I know otherwise.  Most shelters WILL put them down if there is not enough room for incoming animals.  If you truly want to find some help for these two cats, perhaps calling a local RESCUE might work, but be forewarned, most rescues won't take these animals, either.  Rescues rescue cats from the local shelters.  However, a rescue may give you a couple of ideas of how to deal with them.

I used to TNR (trap/neuter (or spay)/return) feral cats.  It's the kindest thing you can do rather than turning them in to any shelters.  The animals would be trapped, I would have them spayed or neutered, and then I would return them where they were found.  A Cat Rescue may even help with TNR, but you have to contact them to find out.

My kitties were stray born.  They are the most affectionate furry kids I could ever want.   :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat:

If you're patient maybe they'll learn to trust you, then you can find them a home.

Feeding stray cats does get them stronger, but then they stay and have babies, "not move on".  ::)

All house cats need to be spayed/neutered and kept inside 24/7.  Then they'll have fewer litters, less disease and we'll have more song birds.  ;)

It is so sad to see an animal that has been dumped because someone decided they don't want them anymore. It really breaks my heart. I cry every time I see a commercial on t.v about animals that have been rescued from abusive owners. I love animals and along with children believe they are truly a gift from God. I believe that any human being that can abuse either one of these gifts are nothing short of the devil.

There are always a bunch of stray cats around my neighborhood. But it's good though cuz they keep the mice away.

Believe me those poor cats are more afraid of you than you are of them.  Try a little love and compassion - like maybe leave them some food and water.  I bet they'll be a lot happier although don't count on them being friendlier.  My experience with strays is that they are feral cats and mostly have no home or even square meals - so just do what you can and pray they don't get killed by some unfortunate, untimely accident - as most of them do.

Do the cats look thin?  If so, they've probably been abandoned.  Do they look young?  The younger they are, the better they would do living inside.  If you catch them, have a vet check them to see if they've been micro-chipped...if so, the owner may be able to be found.

I came home late one night and a kitten came out of no where and grabbed my pant leg this past July.  I picked him up and could feel he was too skinny right away.  I took him in the house and fed him (I have 2 other cats so have everything needed for another, lol).  I've never seen a kitten eat like he did.  For three days he noisily inhaled his food, getting every crumb... and then looked up at me like he was so grateful.

I had the neighborhood kids helping me for 2 weeks trying to find his home.  I called all the local vets, shelters, rescues and nothing.  After 2 weeks, I took him to my vet.  He wasn't micro-chipped so I told her he had a home with me then and he's gotten all his shots, neutered & micro-chipped since.

He has been an awesome little guy, I'm so glad he found me!!  I tell everyone and I've had quite a few people tell me they got their cats the same way and they said their cats are so good, it's like they really appreciate having a loving home after knowing what it's like to be without.

So...if you can, keep them.  If you can't, try to find them a home with someone that you know would be good to them.  Save the "rescue" & "shelters" as a very last resort and please do NOT post them for "free" to the public (they might be taken and used as bait for fighting dogs or sold to a lab).

It would be alarming to see two little kids alone on your property, yet that's what you have.  Two kids with an extra two legs, in fur coats.  If their parents can't be found, they need you help in finding a safe home.

Wow...you can't get animal control to come out  ???  Feral cats are very hard to catch...your local shelter should have someone that can come out or at least give you some traps...but please treat them humanely

I can't imagine dumping cats. How could anyone do that?  :'(  There are a couple of cats that show up here. I open the door and *POOF* they run as if their lives depended on it.

I was raised up around cats, so I have cats that come around that know that they will get fed if I have something in the refrigerator.  These cats are used to me now.  It gets a little irritating because I can't open the door without one of them trying to get in the house.  I even have a cat that I call "Black and Whitey" that follows me to the mailbox.  I went to the door one day and found 4 of them at the door.  I had some stuff to feed them, which they promptly went to.  It is not too bad. :cat: :cat: :cat:   :rainbow:

I'm wondering if the people that the cat scratched had tried to pick them up?  Cats can be very finickey especially around people they don't know.  There are so many hungry animals out there now that it is sad.  I try to feed them, as a matter of fact, in the summer I leave a bowl of water outside for the strays that come by.  If you send them to animal control, most put them down the next day, some will wait for 3 days but as someone else said, they are very inhumane and the animal suffers a horrible death.  Maybe you could feed them a little, they will be forever grateful!

I recently moved from a neighborhood with a very strict HOA to one without and there are about 4-5 cats that wander around. I don't know if they belong to anyone but I bring my dog in from the deck every time she barks at one of them.
