Taking off from college
« on: January 04, 2014, 12:29:22 pm »
I'm going to have to take off spring and summer semesters to save up for tuition and books because I can't afford the bills. I'm sad but at least I'm making progress. I need a real job but haven't found one yet.

How far along are you in your studies? What are you studying and what type of job are you looking for?

I'm about 10 classes away from graduating with a BBA - bachelors of business administration with concentration/major in management and HR minor / Human resources. I'm currently looking for any type of business job really. I don't mind starting out with an entry level job. One of the issues I'm running into is transportation. I don't have a car currently so that makes it difficult. :/

Kind of a Catch-22 situation...sorry to hear you are having difficulties.  Taking a break sometimes takes much longer than you would like it to and then it takes forever to get back into the swing of things.  Have you looked into scholarships, grants, or student loans? Good (better paying)jobs, more often than not, often require a higher education and/or experience in the field. Could you work on the weekends and pay for college? I worked four jobs to pay for college...3 restaurant jobs and a part time banking position.  I know it isn't as easy to find jobs these days but that will remain true whether you are going to school or not.  I would do everything I could, and did,  to finish school so that I could get into a higher paying job upon completion.

Have you looked into any scholarships to finish your BBA? They have all types of scholarships ones that are really silly like if you are left or right handed, etc.... It might be something to look into so you don't fall behind. Plus have you looked into financial aid?

Its okay to take time off!
If it is needed

Ways to get money for college
is scholarships/ loans

Talk to your local bank they'll let you know how much you are eligible for. Also some places you can look for scholarships are on google.

GOOGLE SOUNDS FISHY?
THINK AGAIN

you can get scholarships for being the first generation student
being brown eyes
etc.

GOODLUCK, youll do fine

Thanks for the suggestions. Scholarships are harder to get than you might think. I've tried for many. I already have college loans and grants. I'm reaching the max of what I am allowed to borrow so they are expecting me to pay for the rest of the costs. Even with the help of the financial aid I still can't afford to pay for the rest. However I'm thankful they have paid for as much as they have. They paid for my associates and most of my bachelors. I'm going to keep looking for a job. Yes, I plan to work and go to school at the same time.

Sorry that you are having issues.  At least you have a plan to make it work out.  I don't know if it applies to you, but could your rent your text books instead of buying them?  Also, have you checked Amazon for prices or are you buying them from the school store?

Clearly that's not going to solve your problems, but those few things helped me save a good amount when I was in school.  The book store would change new prices for used books so by going to amazon, I got a good book at a better price.

If you haven't already, you may want to look into, if you have a smart phone, apps like Reciept Hog and Smoopa.  Reciept Hog gives you money back for taking a picture of your grocery reciepts.  Smoopa will offer cash back on certain items if you scan their barcodes and tell them the price of said item at the store you're at.  Obviously, this isn't going to save a ton, but it will help reduce the cost of your groceries and other items a bit to help you save up money quicker.

Tuition and buying textbook can cost a person a lot of money... Its good to leave out school for awhile to make yourself a little bit secure financially.... Never get student loans

You said you do not have a car, do you have a drivers license? It might make sense to see if you can get a cheap used car to get to a job. It limits the places you can look for a job if you have to take public transportation.
