you get what you pay for

It may mean poor quality or good quality.

Sometimes, when you buy something, it is partially assembled.
The company manufacturer gives you some pieces for you to take part in the rest of the assembly of the item.

And, on the other hand,  some things are worth the higher price.

I learned my lesson. I bought a put together futon from Walmart (on sale less than $90). The directions weren't really clear and I put it together wrong, but you can sit on it (very uncomfortable). But I learned my lesson not to buy put together furniture anymore.

Assembly not included certainly has its drawbacks! I can't count the number of times I have seen some of these things in peoples houses and even in their places of business that look like someone set loose a band of drunk monkeys with a set of tools in a lumber yard! YIKES!!

Definitely most frustrating thing ever on Christmas eve putting together the kid's presents!!! One could make a nice sum selling their services as an assembler I think! ;)

I have bought some rta furniture and it was of good quaility. No problem in putting the items together. But you must buy good items. Now as far as most toys and a lot of clothing made overseas i would not touch. Poorly made with iron loaded paint. Clothing falls apart after a couple of washes or is so crroked . Now that is what you pay for you get, and is cra*.

I love kit furniture.  I have very few pieces that I didn't construct.  I even got free replacement wheels for my computer hutch, when a friend broke one off while helping me move, just for the asking.

I have also learned my lesson, no more assembly for me anymore.  It always takes way too long, pieces are missing, directions might as well be in another language, and there are always a few mysterious pieces left over.  I'd rather pay the price for assembly. :o

You got that right!  Some things are worth to pay more than to do it yourself.

I would also rather pay more for something and not have to assemble it. My time is worth more than that!

I can see the benefits of self assembly. Firstly with situations like that, it enables the purchaser to save a little bit of money - it might mean that they can afford to buy something a little more expensive, just so long as they know how to put something together. I put myself in this category. I am prepared to put something together myself if I can save a bit of money.

I don't like to put together furniture or do it yourself computer table etc. We once got a computer table, that we put together, and it was not good. Some people are good at putting stuff together, not me.

I say that all the time especially when it comes to photography.  There are so many other photography companies here in town who are cheap because they are new and not licensed.  I have had many clients who have gone to the "cheaper" photographer only to turn around and book with me because they were not satisfied with their photos.

This isn't always true. Many things are ridiculously marked up for no good reason other than making people think they're buying "luxury".
