We have a big dog and he will look at the food but in no way he will touch it. I trained him when he was a puppy that it was wrong and he listens to my commands except when I am getting his food ready then he dog talks to tell me to hurry up but I can put up to that. We also have a bed for him and another section that is his punishment corner so when he is naughty and we tell him it is wrong he goes in the corner and comes out when we say it is okay to come out. It all depends on the training and the tone of your voice. I always make sure to love him also so he knows the difference.

I used to have a gentle giant -- my little girl was a 180lbs. mastiff. She was fairly well trained in that she wouldn't grab at the food, but would still "beg"... She was so large that when you were sitting at the kitchen table, she could stand and literally look at your dinner plate (that's what I call her "begging"). There was only one time that she was about to eat human food; I was over at my parent's place over the holidays and my mom had just put down a plate of bread slices on the edge of the table for make-it-yourself sandwiches, and Joni (my little :dog: ) gave the stack a little lick. I caught her right away, however, and she slunk away knowing she was bad, leaving us alone for the rest of the meal.

Sounds like an uncomfortable for you.  Anyone with pets should have them better trained than what you experienced.

when guests are over and you are eating it is appropriate to let the dog out if the dogs beg....maybe even keep them outside if the dogs are large and the guest feels uncomfortable.  sorry you had to fend for your meal.  have a great new year.

Never had that problem, I know all about my friends dogs...lol.

My own two "big" dogs NEVER bothered dinner guests and they could go to others houses and not be a problem there for meals either.  Their own meals were homemade, healthy, fresh foods...not overly-processed/chemically laden crap from a bag or by-products in a can, so they knew they didn't have to beg or steal food.

Not a problem for me. Even small dogs can be sneaky about getting on the table and getting food.
