After having just commented under this post last week I couldn't believe what happened to me last night.  This Dell laptop I bought refurbished off Amazon seems to overheat . . . and it's inconsistent as to when it wants to shut down.  Sometimes I can have it on for 20 min. and it shuts down.  Others 3-4 hours at a time.  I've had to Jimmy rig a little lap table with the corner of the laptop hanging off so the fan can blow  - very awkward.  So last night it over heated...I did some dishes...let it cool off and started it up -  - - - but couldn't get online.  We had to do a system restore so I have no clue what happened but as time lapsed and me and my husband were trying to figure it all out I was faced with the inconvenience of possibly having to share one laptop again.  Thanks to his smarts he got this portable electric blanket of mine to get back on the web.

Save all into your USB, it is much convenient now than in the past. I remember we use to save all information to a thick disk and years passed, we use CD to save the information but now we can save into USB  ;)

I would get in touch with my computer tech but I seemed to have that problem anyway not that it has just stopped but it gives me trouble with my internet connection all the time and boy do I get upset. So I could just imagine if it just stopped working I would be livid.

I have everything on my computer backed up on flesh drives. I take my computer to Best Buy for software repairs about every six months. In fact I have to take it back down there now in a week or so because my PC was attacked by malwares the other day.  :(

I'd restart it in safemode if at all possible.  You can fix most problems that way.  If more than that I would see if it is still under warranty and if all else fails I go get a new one.

Probably a little late, but your teacher should be able to take the hard drive and get a hard drive enclousure and just plug it into another computer like you would an external hard drive and just pull her information off of it that way.  Granted, if it's a hard drive issue like it got fried or corrupted, then it won't be able to recover anything, but it's worth a shot.

Personally, I've already had that happen and really I never lost anything all that important.  Mostly what I lost was my school work from long ago, so that's not a big issue in the grand scheme of things.  It is really sad when it happens.  With the price of storage going down I'd highly recommend buying a terabyte hard drive and back things up to that unless you need more.  I have my laptop, my parents, and the family computer backed up to one and there is plenty of room still left so we keep two version of each computer on it.  Losing a month or two of work is sad but way worse than losing everything.

I bought my laptop and ordered a second laptop just in the event I had problems.  My laptop works fine.  It is funny that you asked about this, but my backup laptop died on me.  I awakened one morning, turned on my backup laptop, and got a black screen.  I had problems with my original laptop, but my husband paid $155 to get it fixed.  I am thankful for the fact that I have a laptop.  I would go to the wi-fi hot spot, but my husband put a stop to that when he had me order internet service through HughesNet.  He is paying for it, so I am not squawking.

I telecommute from home but have company back-up computers. If my own PC died, I'd head to the shop immediately if I couldn't fix it myself.

This actually happened to me this morning.  I tried rebooting several times, unsuccessfully, then I turned off the circuit breaker at the back of the pc and tried again--nothing.  I flipped the breaker off again and left it off over an hour; this time the computer came back on.  I immediately backed up all my documents and will leave the external back-up drive connected until the pc can be checked out (or crashes--whichever happens first).  I was really sweating it because my last manual back-up was in October.

If my computer stopped working I would take my computer right to the Apple store, see if they can fix it and if not buy a new one. I cannot live without my Mac.
