I fix it one of two ways.  One way is I spray both sides of the bread with butter cooking spray and cook on both sides in the frying pan.  The other way is I put butter in the frying pan and cook one side and then put more butter in and cook the other side.

I put butter on both side's of my bread, put a slice of cheese, slice of tomato, another slice of cheese then grill it lightly and slowly so the cheese is nice and melted. But if I want to go gourmet instead of only using the American I will also put either some mozz, Colby, or provolone on as the second layer of  cheese.

I butter on side of two pieces of bread lay  in a pan on low heat place slice of cheese on top put on bacon sliced onions and tomatoes put my bread on top of that when the bottom of bread is brown to your liking  flip to browned to my liking  yummmy
I simply put butter on 1 piece of bread , put it on the skillet, cut block chees in thin slices and put that on on the bread, then put 2nd piece of bread on top, and flip over as cheese melts, done deal

I like to put grilled onions inside my grilled cheese. Two pieces of buttered toast and BOOM, grilled cheese.

That's how I fix mine too. I like tomato soup with them.

I very light butter one side of a slice of bread and put one slice of cheese on it. When it's melted enough I pick it up with a spatula and put another slice down (lightly buttered side down, obviously) then place the other slice melted cheese down on top of it. Sometimes I use shredded cheese instead of sliced. Or if I have a block of cheese I'll cut thin (sometimes thick) slices and use it. I've also used ham or turkey too with the cheese.

I like to have tomato soup with my grilled cheese. Grilled cheese tastes great, whatever way you prepare it.

I butter the bread and place in the pan then add cheese then butter the other piece of bread and put it on top. mmmm! I also loved grilled peanut butter sandwiches made the same way (with peanut butter instead of cheese)

Wow I love peanut butter I will try that soon. I butter the bread and first put the bread in the pan with the butter side up so that the dry side will be hot when I flip it over, once I flip the bread with the butter side down I then put the cheese on the bread and flip the other slice of bread over on top of the cheese. Once brown on both sides I enjoy.

I just use butter on one side and one slice of cheese, usually.  The bacon, onion and tomatoes sounds really good, though.
