Pizza Delivery
« on: September 01, 2013, 12:41:38 am »
This post really is meant to be educational because I've never had pizza delivered to my home.

Is a delivery charge separate from tipping the delivery driver?

What is considered to be a fair tip for the driver when we think about the cost of gasoline?

Have any of you ever worked delivering pizzas?

Thanks...in advance...for the information.
Have a great day!

Yes, the delivery charge is separate from any tip.

A few bucks is standard for the tip, maybe $3 to $5.

I have been a long-time lover of pizzas.  But you have to be cautious.  This is no joke; the son of my late ex was called the "Pizza Bandit" because he would rob the drivers.  My daughter would have pizza delivered to her apartment and give them a tip of $2 to $5, if she had it to spare.  It depends on the pizza establishment.  Some of them take so long, you would have been better off going to the restaurant and eating it there.

I use to work in a pizza place.  I did not deliver but there was a $3 charge added to your total for delivery which the driver got.  I think they still expected a tip.  I am pretty sure all pizza places add a charge for delivery. Not sure it all always goes to the driver.  These days every one expects a tip though.  Look at the fast food joints and the little stores you go in that serve food.  They all have tip jars at the register.  I am not trying to be mean but I am struggling to make it and if I go somewhere to buy a sandwich for a couple of dollars it irritates me for the cashier to expect a tip.  Or the person who made the sandwich.  They are being paid at least min wage.  I don't know.  That is just something that really bugs me.

The delivery charge and tip are seperate.

It depends on several factors:

1.  The amount and total cost of the food you ordered
2.  How far the delivery driver had to travel to get to your home or hotel.
3.  The time of day or night .. lunch time vs early evening vs late night
4.  The weather conditions ... was it raining or snowing or a sunny day or clear night

If you are ordering just a small pizza at a normal time in nice weather conditions, $2 may be an ok tip.  In the same situation ordering a bit more, maybe a large pizza and side ... a $5 tip may be normal.  If your ordering during a snowstrom you may be expected to tip pretty heavily anywhere from $10 to $20 depening how much you ordered.

In most cases, a $5 tip is probably the norm.

Yes and like others said you should tip 3-5 bucks but only if order is right and they are on time of course.

I delivered pizza for about 2 years and where I worked yes tip was separate we got a dollar per delivery which was out of the 2.50 they charged customers but we were making only 5.25 on the road and responsible for our own gas and wear and tear repairs and stuff so without getting a tip if it was a far delivery would make it a loss for drivers to make 5.25 and take 45 minutes and only get the dollar and waste gas making less was pretty upsetting. Try to think about the driver such as weather conditions how far gas prices and if not just be ready my biggest pet peeve would be delivering to someone who does not tip but waiting for them 20 minutes to answer door get money etc. If you dont want to tip ok thats fine at least be ready and dont give the driver more of a loss the times they are waiting and not getting a tip they are getting paid only 5.25 and missing out and making other orders late which effects the whole night tip wise.

That sound like it could be pretty annoying.  What pizza company did you deliver for?

Not necessarily in answer to your question.  But yes a tip is separate from the delivery fee and like most tips.  The tip is for the service provided.  I know of one time that I was hosting a small get together and we decided as a group to order pizza.  It was a rather large order for like 10 pizzas and 10 2 liter drinks and when the driver got there this idjit decided he was not going to tip the driver.  So I slipped him a ten on his way out.

The delivery charge goes to the company, not the driver.  A good time is anywhere from $2 to $7 depending on how much the order is... happy eating!

Never worked as a driver but I believe the tip IS separate from a delivery charge.  I usually will tip a couple of dollars. ;D

I always tip the driver when I order pizza.  They are using their own vehicle to deliver and I assume their own gas.  The cost of gas now is so high it is only fair to tip the driver.
