Let's talk books
« on: August 31, 2013, 09:06:36 am »
My father has three copies of The Art of War by Sun-Tzu and I have a desk calendar I kept from back in 2002. All of them (of course an English translation of the original Chinese.) Now two of those copies are almost the same exact text (written on an elementary-type level.)  The last one is written on a collage type level but even that one is not the copy used for the quotes on the desk calendar.  So I have no idea which translation they used for that and I’ve googled and can’t find it.  It’s so frustrating but then books translated into English usually have multiple copies because no one translates the same way.  Crime and punishment has at least two different translations and that’s just if one looks at the opening line.

I’ve stopped buying game hint books with only the rare exception.  The last one I bought was for Skyrim (which I realize is a recent game).  I just don’t see the need to get game books anymore.  With websites like www.gamebanshee.com or www.gamefaqs.com I just don’t see the need to waste money on the book anymore.

While I understand it’s great to have something like the Kindle to get thousands of books in one ‘tablet’ I am just old fashioned in that way that I just have to have a book in my hands to actually read.

I have several herbal remedy books but I found the best two I always use are the The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall and Encyclopedia of Natural Magic by John Michael Greer.

That is because different words may have multiple meanings or nuances of meanings.  Translating from English into other languages causes the same problem I'm sure.  A few examples:

"It's raining cats and dogs" - how would one go about translating that phrase into another language?  It would make no sense because the meaning is not literal, but the phrase isn't necessarily used in other countries.

"The house is on fire." - You could translate it literally, saying the house is on fire.  But it would be incredibly dull to do that with every phrase.  So you may want to switch it up a bit to make for better reading.  For example: "The house is burning to the ground!" "A cataclysmic fire engulfs the house!" "FIRE!"

Just a couple thoughts as to why there may be multiple translations.

I used to think I wouldn't like reading on a tablet, but after I read a book on one, now I prefer it.  Mainly because I like to read before bed, and it just makes it easier.  I also like not having to give up the little space I have to books.

I have not give in and bought a tablet yet. The idea of having more room with out all the books stacked every where sounds awfully good as I dust all the one I have.

I bought a Kindle years ago and I love it.  I do have several hundred hardcovers or novels.  I have always loved books and reading.

I can see how there would be slightly different versions because of translation.  I have read some books lately that have been translated from another language and I can't help but wonder if some of the original meaning is lost.

I really have to catch up on my reading. There are at least 5 books that I can think of off the top of my head that I want to read. :bunny:
