Now that OldBuddy has given his impression, I'll be much more likely to buy refurbished anything because the seller don't want a bad review...

Saying you would NEVER buy refurbished is just plain ignorant, computer tech or not.

Today's computers are modular and if one module goes bad, it doesn't mean the rest is JUNK. If they take it back and replace that module, then run diagnostics testing on the refurbished unit and supply a decent warranty with a good name behind it, why not save 50% to 70% for a machine that could last for years?

The real problem is you may not get the latest and greatest model, but if you just need something to use at home to get online it should work fine.

I am not a computer tech, but I owned a computer business for 25 years and built them from scratch.

If you can afford a top of the line new machine, then by all means get one. But I would rather have a top quality refurbished computer than some off brand bargain machine I bought just on price alone.

It's pretty safe to agree with an acknowledged expert like oldbuddy. So I agree with him. I bought a refurbished Dell (not online, although I love Amazon) and it's been working just fine for several months now.

Well I did it.  I bought a laptop off of amazon last night.  I will let you all know how it works out.  Wouldn't you know this morning I signed into my yahoo group and there is a guy giving away a computer in a town I frequent 2 or 3 times a week.  Doesn't it just figure?

Update - for anyone wondering?  I got a great deal off Amazon - a dell with windows 7 on it.   Weird going back to xp after having gotten used to 8.  All in all I'm satisfied so far.  Other than the battery not working and the laptop getting incredibly hot on my lap (my daughter's digi-draw has become a lap saver for me) I don't have any any complaints.  For less that $150 I should be able to utilize this thing for a few years.  Oh and it did come with a 30 day warranty so if I become completely disastrous over something or find something on it I don't feel as though is right - I'll just return it.  I hope this post will help some of you in the future if considering to make an laptop amazon purchase.

'Other than the battery not working...' I do hope that this was disclosed BEFORE you made the deal... a bad battery is a serious item and not all that cheap to replace. Everything is fine if you knew of this beforehand, if not add some bucks for the cost of a new battery unit.

My laptop has had an almost defunct battery for a couple of years now, which is not a big deal as I just plug the thing in where ever I am.

I have not experienced on buying anything from Amazon but my girlfriend got a furbished laptop and the laptop can't be used if you don't keep in it plugged in. She sent back to be fixed and they said they fixed it but it has the same problem.  She could of purchased a new one at Wal-Mart for he price and shipping of that furbished one the only difference is you have to have all the money at one timed rather than making payments. The have one at Wal-Mart for like $289 plus taxes.
