neighbors' pets
« on: August 20, 2013, 05:48:57 am »
In an apartment building you are able to hear more pet noises.
Each of my two neighbors have a dog.
I can hear them bark.
Both dogs are very protective of their owners.
One has a tendency to nip.
I can't understand why the lady who owns the dog doesn't have him sniff the people who work here every day so he knows they are not a threat.

I agree she could do something to get them more familiar to accept normal activity, but it requires work and effort on her part and a bit of creativity.  Many people don't know how to go about it or what will and won't work, so she probably just finds it easier to put up with.  Unfortunately, she is being inconsiderate because her neighbors are being bothered by it.

Having them sniff the people may or may not work, I think it depends on the dog's temperament and level of protectiveness. Our dogs love the maintenance workers around here and are always very happy to see them whenever they may need to come into our home to do a repair... however if that same worker is outside the house, they'll still bark. It's just their instinct. Usually once I hear them start barking I'll do a distraction until whoever is outside moves on.

We did have neighbors once who kept their dog outside 24/7, and this dog would bark day and night. It was just so unbearable - one of those little yippy dog barks. I bought one of those sonic anti-bark units that look like birdhouses and it cut down on it a bit for a while, but then the dog just started to tune it out I think, because it was bark, bark, bark, bark once again.

My neighbors pets are so cute and yes they sometimes bark but you must remember that is a warning that something is not right. My dog barks and when he realizes things are okay, he stops. If someone comes that he doesn't know he barks until I say it is okay. but if someone slaps anyone he starts up again. so a pet can be friendly as long as you are friendly. A dog will bark at you if you show fear because that is the same as violence to them. My neighbor dog who barks at everyone when I am out in my yard when he barks I just say "hello how are you" to him and he stops. Dogs are very smart just talk to them.
