I'm calculating calorie intake manually. I keep a diary of sorts of what I eat. I break down each meal and get the calories. It's sometimes bothersome because I have to break down my recipes. I have a food value book and I use the internet to find calories and serving size. When I started doing this I couldn't believe how many calories are in pasta. Yikes! I'm taking in 1400 calories a day and I exercise at least 5 days a week. So far I've lost 2 pounds and I'm getting stronger.

My daughter was diagnosed with anorexia last September.  Being on medicaid and living an hour away to the nearest outpatient clinic for eating disorders we've worked with what's close to home to combat this addiction.  She has really grabbed the bull by the horns and took control of her food addiction.  One of the tools she utilizes is an app as well.  It grades her based on what she's eaten and how much activity she's had.  It takes up a lot of her time in entering everything but it really has helped her.  If she has a C- it tells her she needs to eat more fiber, carbs, sugars etc.  Just by eating an apple it boosts her grade and tells her what she needs now.. ie: calcium, vitamin D etc.  She aims daily for An A but is happy with a B+ at the end of the day.  She also has a thyroid disorder so that makes it all that much more difficult to moderate.  Good for you on your weight loss goals.

I use myfitnesspal to track my calories.  Sometimes I go through phases when I get tired of doing it and stop, but still continue to pay attention to what I'm eating.

I'm using My Fitness Pal in conjunction with counting Weight Watchers points and seems to be working fairly well.  I had lost 20 lbs on just Weight Watchers but gained 5 back after I quit counting points.  One of my daughters talked me into trying the Fitness Pal and I lost 3.3 lbs the first week.  I'd like to lose a total of 10-15 more lbs and be able to keep it off.

Congrats! Keep it up. I used an app for a while also and it really helped. The one I used is called My Fitness Pal.

I echo the caution about staying on a 1200 calorie plan for too long.  The problem I've found with calorie counting is if you force yourself to stay too long on such a low calorie plan, you mess up your natural metabolism, which results in your body burning less calories, then you plateau.

I've found the best way is to change your attitude toward food and think of it as fuel.  How many overweight animals do you see?  Not many - because they are moving ("exercising") and eat when they need to.  The human species has stopped moving (particularly in urban areas) and eat when they want to.  Kind of messes up how your body was supposed to function.

Use it to get yourself kickstarted, but find a way to change your exercise/eating habits as a lifestyle, otherwise it'll come back.

Hope you have success, just providing some things to think about along the journey.

As of today I'm down 4 lbs. I'm so excited. It is a little tiresome scanning barcodes, and having to keep track of every meal but it is worth it.

Congratulations on your weight loss! You just have to keep doing what ever works for you.

I'm starting a new diet too. I really need to take off some pounds but I don't have a smart phone so the aps won't work for me. I will probably go back to Sparkpeople. That is a good supportive site for weight loss.
