I've never heard of a business using a tracking database to see who had looked at an expensive item that had since gone missing to see who they could blame for stealing it.   Many stores/businesses use security people,  two-way mirrors, security cameras (some even have audio so they have on tape any conversation happening).  There are asset-protection people in many stores that are paid to "blend in" with customers and keep "an eye on people".

Rewards cards for various stores/gas stations are used for tracking the shoppers purchases.  Businesses like to know what the customers likes/preferences are so they can keep trying to come up with new products they'd be interested in.

I have alot of rewards cards and I use the internet alot.  I could care less what company (or peoples) know what brand of toilet paper I buy,  how much I spend on cat food a week or how many coupons I use per month.   The "perks" save me money, I am happy with my purchases and my "go-to" store now has the information needed on how to keep my business without me having to do a thing except buy, use my rewards card and $ave.

People have ALWAYS been "watching" people.  There are people that "people watch" as a hobby and have no shame in admitting it.  I would be more afraid of them, or of a stalker, or even of the neighbor occasionally seen aiming his binoculars at my windows than any store tracking my purchases, or seeing where I had shopped.

I did not know that a person could be tracked through a smartphone.

When I worked for Kohl's, there was in-store wifi that you could use and it basically just showed deals all over your phone if you used it in the store. It was more annoying than anything.

And until recently you hadn't heard of stores tracking people by their cell phones either.  I personally don't care.  I do not have a smart phone and they can't do it to me anyway.  I guess everyone is different but I feel it is none of anybody's business what I buy.  And I certainly think it is no one's business that they will eventually sell my info to.  And if you think that doesn't or won't happen you are kidding yourself.  Look at what just happened with Verizon.  They been swearing to their customers they don't sell their info but have been giving info on calls, texts, and everything else to the government for who knows how long.  It's not that people are trying to hide anything.  It's the principle at stake.  The more you willingly give up or say oh who cares to the less freedoms you have.  Some schools have started making the kids carry see thru back packs and the girls if they carry a purse carry a see thru purse.  Girls have the right to carry pads and tampons without having to carry them where everyone can see them.  It's a privacy thing that we shouldn't have to give up and def. should not have stolen from us.
