I need a class on my computer? How do you tell if other things are taxing your computer?
I look at the Windows Task Manager. Click Ctr/Alt/Del and a window will come up. If you have an older computer with XL, the Task Manage will come up directly.
If you have a newer computer with Windows 7 or later, a screen will come up with several options, one of which is "Start Task Manager". Click that to see the Windows Task Manager.
The Performance tab will show you CPU usage and memory being used; below the graphs are figures for how much memory you have and what is used. Most of this is g(r)eek to me, but when cpu usuage approaches 80%+ and memory usuage is too high, performance suffers.
The Applications tab shows you what apps you have running.
But most interesting is the Processes tab. This shows you all the programs/processes that are working to run your computer. It comes up in alphabetic order, but you can click on the 'CPU' column to sort them in CPU usage or on the 'Memory' column to see which processes are using memory. You may have to click twice to get the list in descending order.
If you see a process name that you don't know what it is, try googling it. It's how I've figured out what some things are and whether they should be there or not.
If your computer is running slow and you haven't cleared your cookies and temp files recently, clearing them may improve your PC performance. I use CClearer (free version). It clears all my browsers caches and wastebasket at once -- takes a minute or so to run.
You do need adequate working memory (RAM) to run RL. I can barely use it on my desktop with 1.25 gig of ram. CPU usage is usually at or near 100%. Not a good thing for the PC. Now I run RL on my laptop (8 Gig ram) with Chrome and it's working well. CPU usage is about 10-20% with RL running alone. If I'm running games that use Adobe flash, the CPU usage is in the 50-70% range. That taxes the laptop and occasionally Adobe Flash crashes.
