let's talk about racial equality and stereotypes
« on: July 09, 2013, 07:25:20 pm »
I hear a lot of people say things about people of other races: I hear the words "black" "Mexican" "Chinese", etc. why not use the words African-American, Asian, and Hispanic? there are lot of stereotypes going around. one stereotype is that West Africans ask for money. let me tell you this. I have hundreds of Ghanaians and a handful of Naija people as friends and some Ivorians. not one of them has asked me for a penny. I was taken aback when a Naija lady popped up on chat and said she was hungry, but she made no mention of money.

i know where you're coming from. however, i'm white and i don't call
myself "caucasian" when speaking. i don't hear many african-american,
asian, or hispanic people calling themselves the proper word, either,
and i have friends of different races.

when i hear words like "black", i don't hear them in a derogatory way;
maybe because words like these have become so normalized, thus
a lot of us have become desensitized to the racism behind them?

People are people regardless of their race, religion, sexual orientation, etc.  Some folks carry baggage; however, we can each do our best to accept everyone.   :heart:

Have a great day!

I agree, people are people, and religion is religion. If you believe in g-d or don't is up to you. You shouldn't be critized for it. Just like you shouldn't be critizied for the color of your skin or ethnic backround.

I am an African-American and I think it is sad when people like to label others by a color barrier.  I have been around Whites, Hispanics and Chinese, and I have nothing bad to say about any of them.  The pigmentation in us makes the color but, when you take the skin color off, we are part of one big melting pot.  My late grandmother raised me not to look at people based on skin color, because God made us all.  That being said, people stereotype each other.  The fact is, you are not hired based on your skin color; you are hired because of your credentials or who you know.  Can't we all get along and stop this silliness? :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :thumbsup: :wave:
