What do you think?
« on: July 05, 2013, 07:36:41 am »
Two people were buying lottery tickets and sharing the cost for several weeks. One day, the first person asks the second person to cover their half of the cost, does so, and wins money. Should the second person give half of the winnings to the first person?

I see someone's been looking into that new ABC show, Lucky 7, eh?

For me, it would depend.  Basically, if I found I had the lucky ticket, I would not say anything and see if the person pays me what they owe (assuming they needed to wait for a paycheck).  Since in your scenario, they've been doing this for weeks, the person who was borrowing most likely had every intention of contributing, and had the money never been won, would have eventually paid their half.  So I would have no issue honoring that unwritten agreement.

If it was someone who was constantly "borrowing" money and never paid it back, I would probably have a different take on it as they really were not contributing.

I heard someone ask this question at the end of a Judge Mathis episode (I wasn't watching it).

If I put in the funds and won the money, I would wait until I was paid his (or her) half of the contribution.  If I never got the money I loaned for half of the contribution, the money is mine.

If I had been doing this for several weeks and won one of those millions of dollars jackpots, you bet I would share it with them. There would be plenty to go around.

You would ignore the several weeks you split the costs?
Couldn't you take what you were owed out of the other person's half of the winnings?

Yes, because that was the original bargain they made between them and I'm sure if it were the other way around it would be expected to be honored as well!!!!
