Hot Dog eating contest
« on: July 04, 2013, 09:09:49 pm »
Is anyone else somewhat disturbed by the fact that this is 1) an actual contest 2) so popular?  It promotes all the wrong things and I feel like some day some will get severely sick from it.

I can't believe they still have these kinds of contests!  Someone could easily choke to death--especially on hot dogs.  I would think someone would be concerned about liability issues if something happened to a contestant.

Bunch of pigs stuffing themselves for money.  Sooner or later they'll feel the physical effects from their gluttony.

It is hard to believe that those type of contests are still around. When I watched it on the news I gagged when they crammed all those hot dogs in their mouths. YUCK!

Did you hear the total breakdown on how much was consumed in calories, fat grams and sodium? Not only are contest like that unsafe,  they are down right disgusting.

Its amazing though what people will do for money.

I personally think it is a ridicules event.  Right up there next to goldfish swallowing.  But I suppose it is a free country.

I think it's rather silly but I don't really intend to get all upset about it.  Since the winner gets $10,000 and that fellow keeps winning, he's made about $40,000 or $50,000.  Consequently I surely can see why he does it but I'm not going to watch it.  I think I'd get sick.  I heard he gained 8 lbs. eating the 69 hot dogs.  He seemed alright when he was interviewed.

So many contests are wrong and dangerous for those that enter them.  Yesterday's winner (male) ate sixty nine hotdogs.  His female counter part, who weighed a mere one hundred pounds, ate thirty eight and three quarters hotdogs to edge out the runner up by a quarter of a hot dog. One of the contestants was in the hospital today having stomach surgery.  Yes this is an ignorant show of superiority in a field that means absolutely nothing.  The same could be said of running marathons or ultra-marathons (as I do). What is the purpose?  If it is rewarding a destructive behavior it should be stopped.

Is it stupid? Yes.
Should it be banned? Of course not.

Ban smoking, alcohol, sugar, tv, pornography, and anything else that is bad too.  Football players get hurt, ban that.

I have been in power-eating contests before, pie-eating contest.  If you know your body and the art of power-eating, you will not choke, gain a lot of weight, and the feeling of only pride for yourself for just trying is satisfying.  Power-eating is a sport don't cha know.

I have always felt eating contests were a little too much.  They are in the category of things I would not like to participate in.

I don't agree with the hot dog eating contest, but I agree with the person comments above there's a lot of other things that I would ban first.

I am surprised that the person doesn't get sick from indigestion.  Eating something like hot dogs that fast can't be good.  The cash sounds good, but I just don't agree with taking that kind of risk. ???

Do you ever notice that the people that win are "stick pins". I am originally from NYC and it is a pretty big thing and is supported by Nathans. Don't worry they have plenty of EMT/Paramedics around that can handle anything that may happen. I don't see this as anything worse than these idiots that go on "reality shows" doing weird and unusual things for money.
