No References
« on: June 26, 2013, 05:51:12 am »
The following are possible reasons to be against references for job interviews:
- Nobody who wants to be hired will choose a reference who will say something negative about them.
- Not everyone is outgoing with a lot of friends. Some will only know a few people or less.
- An interviewer learns things about you from your resume and interview. Why do strangers (maybe) have an affect on you getting hired or not?

Do you think references should be required or not?

References are necessary because the potential employer learns of the potential employee's character.  One of my cousins went to prison.  Before he died, however, he was hired and fired on the same day for going to the bathroom 11 times in an hour.  I think that, if you want a job, like me, you should be hired; if not, do not waste your time or the employer's time by choosing to make him or her regret he or she hired you.

You can easily get someone to lie for you and sing your praises.  Find a stranger on the street and pay them if you really don't know anyone.  Get a relative or be your own reference.  Disguise your voice a little if they call.

References are usually a waste of time.  Unless there is something wrong with you, who in their right mind would give a person as a reference who would say anything negative about you.  You are only going to give out names of people who will have nothing but praise for you.

References can be a great help to the employer....if they ask the right questions.  I think they believe if you can't get a reference, the applicant may not be a good choice.  If you are short on references, try doing some volunteer work to build the background you need.

When I hire someone at my job, I never call their references because as you said people can just lie for them. In an interview you can get a good grasp of their personality and how they act. But you will not be able to know everything until you actually hire them and have them working for you. So far I have hired around 80 employees since we opened and only been wrong about 2. Pretty good with not checking references.

DANG! I think I am going to start asking for references before I sign anyone up for Fusioncash. Do you think that will cut down on the inactive ones?

I have references but made intentional typo on the phone numbers and of all the jobs I have applied to over the last 10 years, I have never been turned down a job I applied to or have been asked about the incorrect reference numbers.

You can find me hanging out on Google :)

More often than not, your references won't be called. If the employer feels there is something to gain from references, why not ask for them?

Should they be required?  That's debatable.  I don't have a problem with them - but then again, I don't have a problem getting them.  Every job and internship I've had I've needed references for.
