Depends on the sandwich sometimes I like to call it a philly especially if I get a philly steak sandwich which are awesome with all the bell pepper and onions and swiss cheese and the philly steak on a hoagie bun.

I also like to use sub buns to make a meatball sandwich which is off the chain with the meat sauce, meatballs, different veggies depends on what kind you want on it, and swiss and american cheese..  Yummy.

I've always called them subs. I've heard hoagie used but I've never heard grinder before.

Here in Mississippi, we call them subs as well.  When I lived in Chicago, I was a big fan of the hoagies and have never heard of a grinder; what exactly is a grinder?  Another name for a sandwich I do not see here:  the Dagwood (after Dagwood Bumstead of Blondie, the cartoon).  For those who are not as old as I am, a Dagwood is a big sandwich chunked full of good food.  It is filling and very good.

I call them subs.  Everyone around here does, including Subway.  I heard the history behind the hoagie.  Sandwiches were made on Haug Island(not sure of spelling), and were called Haugies, which later switched to hoagies on the mainland.

If it's a big sandwich I call it a sub, but if it's small I call it a sandwich.

It depends you could order a sub or a steak hoagie, a grinder that would be some type of sandwich. Each has there own name for what ever type of sandwich it is. My favorite is a steak and cheese submarine.
