Favorite Freeware

Gotta love free software especially if it helps you acheive your goals.  It's nice to find valuable software where you can obtain a free version.

I use Ccleaner by Piriform to clear my browsing data and clean up temporary files.

I also like Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast.  Avast has a preboot scan that you can do if you find that your computer has a serious problem.

What is your favorite freeware and why?

I also love CCleaner and use it a lot, even at work. Since I'm a programmer, a lot of the freeware that I use is geared towards work-related stuff... FileZilla as an FTP client, RAR File Open Knife for opening up RAR-compressed files, and TFTPD32 for turning a normal PC into a TFTP server (used mostly for configuring routers and switches with the latest IOS images).

For non-techy stuff, I love Media Monkey as my MP3 jukebox. It is very easy to look things up and create a playlist given various criteria. The modding community is also pretty strong for this, creating many useful pluggins. One that I really enjoy allows you to not only search for certain criteria, but also weight the different results. For example, I can search for songs that are from 1990 to the present, and weight those songs within the last 5 years heavier than the rest so that they will tend to get played more often.

I also check out Home of the Underdogs from time to time to see if any of the classic games that I remember playing are now free to play without copywrite infringement (usually after a certain length of time, the publisher will offer up the game as free, eg. Bethesda has allowed the 1st game in the Elder Scroll series to be downloaded and played for free). One of my favorite games that I picked up was Dink Smallwood. Not only was it somewhat of a quick, fun RPG, but it also included editors for making new quests, levels, etc. In fact, even though the game was released as freeware in 1999, it still has a fairly strong modding community of fans. Some of the stuff put out by the fans are even better than the original!
