Euthanasia
« on: June 01, 2013, 10:43:13 pm »
Aside from reilgious beliefs, what argument do you have against euthanasia? If an individual is chronically or terminally ill, do they have the right to end their own suffering? Imagine a person who has been sick for years and only worsened with little hope, painful treatments that only prolong a very poor quality of life. This person is just tired and worn out, no longer can experience pleasure or happiness.

What are your thoughts?

Although I can't speak for anyone else, I know that if I had to live as you explained in your post, I would rather die.  Suffering is a very personal thing and I do believe that people should have the choice of euthanasia if that's what they want, BUT, I also feel that it has to be that ONE PERSON'S CHOICE - not left up to a FAMILY member, FRIEND, or PHYSICIAN/HOSPITAL/GOVERNMENT to decide.

I have to agree with BlackSheepNY.  If there is no hope, the person is in pain, and is 100% "with it" and chooses to die, then it is their decision and if we agree with it or not, it is not our choice.  The decision CANNOT and should not be made by family members, doctors, or hospital administration.  I hate to see a person suffering and in pain when there is nothing anyone can do but sit and wait until death.  I have watched too many people die of different cancers, and it's not a pretty sight.  My one friend begged to die, he was in so much pain, and it took him two days until it was over.  We allow our pets to be put down if they are sick and there is no hope, but we allow people to spend their final days on earth in pain.

I have not really thought about it. But we are filling out our living wills. It states that  i do not want to be kept alive by machines. Just keep me hydrated and let me go. So maybe with obama care they will put a clause in for euthanasia since it is not designed for long care. And all of that might or may be in awful pain can just say  push the button Doc. and give me a extra shot.

Having worked in the health care field, I have seen cases where people were being kept alive by various machines with no hope for recovery. I feel this is selfish on the part of the family members. We would allow a beloved pet to die comfortably at the Vet's. Why not show the same consideration for a beloved relative? Can't you see the fear in their eyes when you visit? Let them go in peace.

I personally have no issue with it, however, I have MS and someone with MS called Dr. Korvikian (sp?) and I was pissed, but I have no pain and 60% of the folks with MS have pain... so it's not my call, it's a personal decision...

Personally, if I were in that kind of situation, I would rather die.  But Dr. Jack Kevorkian (aka Dr. Death) got in trouble because he preferred to assist the people with that kind of request.  Doctors were put on this earth to save lives, not take them.  I bring forth another argument; people who prefer to be dead do so because they are afraid of living, being dependent on someone when they used to do those things for themselves.  I am independent and, if I were in their shoes, I would be like them.  You go through life knowing that you cannot do the things you used to do for yourself.  It is not fun for them; I feel compassion for those people, but a doctor assisting you to die with dignity is breaking the law, as Kevorkian did. :o ??? :o

I definitely think it is a personal decision that needs to be carried out by the person involved. But what if you physically can't do it? Did you see Million Dollar Baby? Phenomenal movie that I don't think I could ever stand to watch again.

That is a great example.

Some states have legalized forms of euthanasia, mostly physician assisted, if you can find a doctor who will do that. There are many hoops to jump through too. I can't imagine asking a loved one, bc i wouldnt want that person to feel any remorse/guilt. But, what do you do if you can't do it yourself?

Someone absolutely has the right to assisted suicide if they are suffering. It is completely up to the person themselves.

I dont understand our society on this issue.  I beleive in Dr koverkein spelled wroung and  Euthanasia.  we take our pets out of there mesery.  But a terminal  person in down hill pain  we dope  up and keep them miserable.  It must be all about money.  but it sure is stupid  wright your living will!

I do not want to be kept alive on machines. Just shoot me up and let me go Why put these poor people on machines. Yeah i know some just don't want to lose their loved ones, but why be selfish when the person is in so much pain or have no idea of what is going on.

My personal desire is to have life support terminated and have any pain meds to keep me comfortable, yet able to communicate with other people who come to say good bye. I don't want something that will kill me added to my IV because I believe in enduring to the end, but I don't want to suffer from pain while awake if pain meds are available.
