Were you told your dreams were stupid?
« on: May 26, 2013, 09:24:20 pm »
I have, for about the past 3 years, been getting people who have nothing to say about my dream except that I should really go into something else.  I find this really annoying since no one seemed to mention this BEFORE I went to college for this career and only decided to alert me when I was in my final few years.

Personally, I don't care if they think I should go into something else or not, cause I'm going to go into what I want to go into, but it is really hard being constantly told that you are making a mistake or that you should consider something else.

If this is something you want to do, then ignore them or, if they continue to start in on you, just cut them short.  Tell them you appreciate their concern, but this is your life and your choice.

I have been there.  My late uncle told me I was going to be sorry like my mother, and yet, I didn't let that stop me.  They ask you to talk to them about anything, and tell you that your dreams are stupid?  If you listen to them, you will be just as silly as they are.  Let them say what they want; they are entitled to their opinion, but do not let their opinions stop you from making you who you are destined to be.  Good luck my dear. :star: :peace:

No, I've never been told that.  Dreams aren't stupid.

I get told that all the time because I am trying to do something for myself instead of sitting in a cubicle eating Subway every day.  Most people are non-thinkers and can't comprehend a life without the box.  I disagree.  Just be aware that money is not as consistent and you will likely have to be very financially strict with yourself if you are doing something most think is a bad idea.

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to paint.

I don't remember all the objections to it-but there were enough that I stopped trying.
For almost 40 years.

I started painting at 52 and have sold some of my work.
It still surprises me when someone likes my paintings.   :)

Don't give up your dreams.
They're what makes life bearable.

I agree w/ everyone: forget the haters because your dreams aren't stupid. I have a fantasy of either being a journalist or making films/documentaries but every time I think of them they seem distant, plus my parents want me to be a psychologist. I guess we just gotta do what makes us happy in the end, so if I like media production, I'll continue to pursue it.
 ;)
Opinion: 1) a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter 2) belief stronger than impression and less strong than positive knowledge
This is the internet, learn to let people have opinions. And don't be so sensitive.  8)

I do believe dreams keep us to keep pushing on.  We need some motivations or we get lazy.

If it is what you want to do then go for it!  that makes the people telling you that sort of thing the stupid ones.  I have always felt that if you don't give your dream at least a try you will always regret it

Better to have a degree than not have a degree.
