if you felt you were compromising your principles at the place of employment, received a bonus CAR or some significant bonus, would you have the courage to quit??

Now, no.  I have been out of work it seems like forever.  So I don't think I would be able to quit.  {if it was not illegal or completely immoral!}  I think I probably would not have taken the job if I knew it was against everything I stood for.

In this economy I would only quit if I thought what was happening was illegal.

I faced that very situation many years ago, and I did 'quit' that company. However, I did it rather stealthy like. I was a commissioned employee and it was the company's demand that we sell a 'quota' of house inventory that everyone knew was not up to what we were expected to represent it to be. The first time I was instructed to 'unload' X amount of this garbage I decided I was going to leave the company. I refused to sell the garbage but made no issue of it with the management. Rather I carefully built my book of clients while keeping my sales levels of legit things high enough that they could not make too much of my failure to comply with the garbage dumps they wanted of everyone. I stayed for 1 year to the day, and I had lined up a better postion in a much more reputable competitor. The day I left I was having my annual review interview with the regional muckety-muck and of course he asked about my having not sold a single pennys worth off the 'blue sheets' as they called the garbage pile. I simply replied that I had far to much respect for those that trusted me and depended on me to be an honest broker of our wares, the muckety-muck started to say something but I held up my hand and said we didn't need to pursue anything any further, handed him my letter of resignation, and thanked him for the company allowing me to receive a wonderful education. I walked out and never looked back.

Soooo if there as any advice here I would say to make arrangements for the new job before you leave the one that is paying for your food and stuff... of course if they are criminals, call the authorities on them!  ;D

Great question!

I can relate to this.  I used to work for a small retail grocery chain.  I am divorced now, but at the time, I was a cashier/clerk in the store and my husband was the assistant manager.  He actually thought he could get away with a full day's deposit and claim somehow that "oops, it disappeared out of my car on the way to the bank."  Wow!

But, when I found out what went on, I immediately notified our store manager only to find out that she was in on it and knew about it and the plan was for them to reap the benefit of that little heist together.

Yeah, I got out of that store with a quickness, took a transfer (so, no, the answer is that I did not quit my job) to another location, spoke up to higher ups and wanted to ensure that although of course they knew we were married I was not tangled in that mess.  I kept my name clear, transferred to a better store with a great manager who really cared about his people, took a promotion to shift leader in like no time at all and la la la happily ever after blah blah blah.

But, that is the best I can relate to your question.

with the job market if it was not illegal I don't think I would be quitting a job unless I had one just as good or better to go to asap

I am not sure.  If what I was doing would unethical or illegal, I would first go to our ethics department and make them aware of what I was being asked to do to make sure that it was or was not ethical.  Otherwise, I would do it, but with the understanding that it is a one time deal.  If I am asked to do it again, I may go looking for employment elsewhere.

If its not hurting anyone else, then I wouldn't quit. My principles are firm but not prone to flexibility when the situation calls for it.
