The best car I ever had was a 1974 Olds Cutlass. It had a 360 4 barrel. More speed than I needed. It was heavy enough to go where ever I needed in snow. It wasn't even too bad on gas. About 20 MPGs. It sure was built a lot better than cars are now.

VW TDI....

Assuming you get a reliable one they are one of the best things on the road today...

Chip Tune it to give a bit more power on the interstate and away ya go...

My `03 got 45 mpg over 120k miles of driving (yup, I tracked every tank of fuel I put in it...) and was a total hoot on the interstate... (toss ya back in your seat jumping from 65 to 85 (closed course,  professional driver etc etc etc;)

could get 55mpg if ya drove it economically... and E Rogers was getting 76+ outa the same engine... but he's more careful with is driving...

Oh, and if you take care of the TDI (oil change every 10k if it needs it or not, correct synthetic oil, filters every 20k or 40k depending on the road conditions) it will only need routine maintenance...

say, a timing belt ever 100k
perhaps a cam shaft at 200k (toss $125 at a part every 200k... what's to worry about)

and ya might need rings at 400k...

assuming ya drive lots (I put 40k+ / year on my `03 until it hit a rock ledge at 65.... which btw is bad for the alignment)

I love the 1970 Monte Carlo. I actually have had one that we planned on fixing up for the last 3 years but finally sold it. Figured if I want one bad enough, I will just buy one that doesn't need any work.
