Keeping Healthy

May is Stroke Awareness Month.  As many of you know, Grandma suffered a stroke in September.  Stroke is the third leading cause of death.  It is important to be aware of the warning signs and risk factors for stroke.

My ex mother in-law suffered a stroke in January 1982.  She was in the bathroom on the floor for 12 hours before someone checked on her.  When my ex-husband heard the news, his assertion was that he was not going to visit her in the hospital.  I told him that God could have taken her if He wanted to, but He is giving her time to say goodbye to her family.  I pointed out that he would always question himself if he didn't go see her.  We went to see her (I told him I would go with him); he cried when he saw her appearance.  I stood at the end of her hospital bed.  She told me she knew that I loved her son.  I admitted to my love for him, but told her he had a strange way of looking at things.  She smiled at me and told me not to be upset with him because he took it honest.  My late grandmother had made her a quilt at my request and I received it that Saturday.  She passed away on the operating table at 11:40 am on January 18, 1982.  I had to break the news to him that his mother had passed.   After her burial, he tried to commit suicide by taking 3 sleeping pills and 5 nerve pills.  It took several days for that concoction to wear off, so he slept.   His family always wanted to know what kept me with him; I married him, had a daughter and stayed with him through the good times as well as the bad times.  After awhile, I discovered I had gotten to the point I could not take it anymore and left him in August 2000.

Knowing the signs of a stroke is not an insurance policy that it won't happen.  I am sorry that your grandmother had a stroke, but the question that stands out in my mind is will she recover? ??? ??? ???
