Parenting advice
« on: April 26, 2013, 07:12:39 pm »
I have a 9 month old who has always been so sweet, lovable and just a good baby all the time. Here in the past few weeks she has been going through a stage where if you tell her "no" so grunts at you. Her other option of not getting her way is a fake cry except its screaming at the top of her lungs and this scream is ear piercing. She will consistently do this until she gets her way or finds something else that grabs her attention. I realize she is a bit to young for discipline but these tantrums can not continue.  Any suggestions on what I should do to get her out of this stage?

I agree, try directing her attention elsewhere, or ignoring the tantrums. She'll probably stop if she isn't getting attention, or if her attention is put somewhere else.

From your description, it sounds like a common phase most children go through about this age.  She's attempting to communicate with you in the only means she knows.  The trick will be how to encourage the communication attempt while trying to teach her that her current method isn't necessarily the best choice.

I found this article which you might find useful.  Some suggestions in there is to acknowledge the communication attempt but use shushing to get her to understand she can get your attention without being so loud.  Maybe try to teach her some baby sign language that she can use instead of screaming to communicate.  And for you to try to stay calm as possible (maybe invest in some good earplugs  ;) )

Hopefully some of the suggestions will work for you.  Good luck!

Maybe it is a common phase, but I have never experienced that one.  My daughter never acted out like that.  She is testing you, and I will say this:  she is determined to get her way.  If you do not correct this behavior and soon, she will embarrass you in public.  Diverting her attention from this may not be as easy as it sounds, but it is worth a try. :o :o

she is exerting her independance, won't last to long and then she will back to her sweet self.

Don't give her what she wants because she will learn quickly that screaming works. Maybe try turning your attention elsewhere until the screaming stops then shower her with attention when she is quiet.

Give her what she wants, she is too young to be disciplined.

Whenever she do that, you should said "stop" and leave her alone even when she cries for hours. My baby was like that and now whenever i said stop, she stops instantly.

It's a normal stage....sometimes the terrible 2's begin early.
Directing her attention elsewhere is a good choice to try.
It's never to early to start using time-outs....one minute per year of age,...but that young, time-out usually means just holding her on your lap till she calms down // cooperates, etc.  Can't get that age to site in a chair alone too well
God luck
