I have no doubt that social security will become a thing of the past.  I just feel it is a matter of time.  I am as sure as I can be that while I pay into social security, I will never see a dime.

Was this on the news today? did I miss something? I don't know why the President would even consider cutting out Social Security there are elderly people and people on disability that rely on Social Security as their income since they are either too old or unable to work due to an disability that prevents them to hold a Job or even work. If the president cuts out Social Security what will the old and unable to work disability people do?  For the rest of us I think we all should get back all our money that we all put into Social Security out of our work earnings because if Social Security gets cut out we will never see our Social Security money when we retire and old. Just seems far to me that way. Why should the government be able to have our Social Security money if it gets cut out and dissolved. It is from our earnings taken out we earned it the government sure didn't earn it for us. so why should they be able to keep it all. Just doesn't seem right to me nor does any of this cutting out Social Security makes any sense to me.    :bs:

I think the only thing he will do is change the "age" for eligibility.  By that I mean, he will increase the age to 70 from the current 66 for full retirement and for early retirement from 62 to 65.  Other than that I don't see where else he could cut anything.  After all if he tries to cut what the current seniors get now - HE WILL B E IN FOR A BIG FIGHT AND EVERYBODY KNOWS DON'T GET "GRANNY" ANGRY!!!!!

Lets see the first 2 years he was in office we did not get a cost of living raise, but congress got theirs. Then we go a 1 1/2% raise just before the elections of 2012. Now this. Our generations worked and put more money in the social security fund then any other generation ( i am including the baby booms with us). Now we have so many people on welfare and food stamps we can't afford it, and if they are not working they are not paying in. Now all of the people without jobs and not looking any more the government is looking at what is in ss to spend and to heck with us. They haven't paid back what was taken before.

The proposal is to lower the cost of living adjustments. Not exactly a cut, so I could see it happening.

It is a sad state of affairs to walk into a local retailer and see 60+ year-old clerks on the register trying to supplement their Social Security in order to make ends meet, but it is a reality - a sad, sad reality.

It is a reality in my own life.  My 76-year-old mother is holding two jobs to pay the bills.  Luckily she found two very enjoyable and not-at-all strenuous jobs (Church secretary and bookkeeper in a law office).  If he cuts any deeper, something needs to be done about it!

I hope not, it would be a shame.  You work possibly 45 + years to finally retire and collect social security and find it isn't enough to live on and you still have to work at age 65, 70, 75, etc!  Then we find congress and the senate work 1/2 the time the average person works, gets many perks, and a raise! What's wrong in this picture?

The President cannot change anything about Social Secutiry, that has to be done by Congress. As it relates to govenrment spending, a bill to do that would have to be introduced in the House of Representatives, that is the law. Argued there then sent to the Senate for approval, THEN the President would either sign it or not sign it. That is how all money matters must be handled. The President has no authority to do anything like this, but the one we have at the moment does try to bypass Congress at every turn when he thinks he knows better. I am surprised that the Congress has not taken steps to stop him on some of these inane manuvers, but they have not seen fit to do that, yet.

Social Security must be changed at some point, it simply cannot continue as it is in its present form. Most likely they will adjust the age upwards before one can start drawing benefits, and maybe eliminate some of the types of folks that can now collect benefits. The program has been expanded in coverage far beyond anything it was ever designed for and that must be addressed. some of the current proposals are quite reasonable as they would not have any sffect on those currently 'on the system' or those that are near that point in time.

I think we will continue to have the Social Security program around for a long time.  They may change the eligibility requirements, the retirement age, the definition of what constitutes a disability,  how the benefits are computed and how the cost of living is computed but there will be some sort of a program to take care of retirees and the disabled.
