If I had never tried online dating then I wouldn't be engaged right now. I had a hard break-up over 6 years ago...hard being that my ex was just no good. So I went online just to find people to talk to outside my regular group of friends and family. I had found a few interesting people on there. Many I knew were not looking for the same thing as me so I passed them by. After some writing back and forth I met up with some people casually and had many fun evenings out. Went dancing, for supper, drinks, etc...Lots of good conversations but in general I felt alone. Then I came across this one post without a picture. We ending up writing back and forth for days before I even saw a photo. Then after weeks of e-mails we spoke on the phone for many more weeks until the one evening I drove over an hour to meet up. We have been together ever since. My brother also found his wife on a dating site. We both got lucky on dating sites over the computer and they are two different sites. So I am all for dating sites. Yes you may come across several people who you want nothing to do with, but you also may just find the one! As long as you are always careful if you meet up with someone face to face that is what really matters. Just have fun and mostly be honest. Good-luck and hope you find what you are looking for.

My husband and I met online over 5 year's ago. Granted, we were not on a dating site, it was just a Yahoo chat room. We were both recently divorced, and bored. He sent me a personal instant message, and I replied. He called me the next day... We made plans for that evening. Simple plans, however. He joined me for drinks with some friend's of mine at my place. We had a great time, and we were hooked from the first time we hit enter. I can understand why someone might be nervous about meeting someone online. Even though it is sort of silly when you really examine the whole of it. Just think about this for a moment, will you? Isn't the entire world sketchy? Do you hesitate to live your life due to being nervous? Heck, I'm nervous every day of my life(It is a disorder). You can't allow your interior emotion's to interfere with your personal success in life, which is built in the exterior world. Personally, I feel paying to join some dating site is pretty over rated. IMO- If you just stay open to opportunity, it will knock. Just be open... it will walk right in. I really do believe that. I really did love my husband the second I saw him. I knew he would be my companion in this journey of mine:) I love him dearly and know there is NO possible way we would have ever met if it weren't for FATE. Believe, and it is yours.

I met my husband on line!  I was just bored and lonely and just wanted someone to talk to.... the first time we met was at a crowded restaurant and we drove separate cars. We hit it off right away even though he was the only one I met that way.  We were married a year later!  He was 63 and never been married!  I was 53 and divorced over 20 years!

Although I have never used online dating, I do believe people do need to use caution when doing so. There are a lot of creeps out there. I am sure if I were single I probably would try it. But personally I think it is a little more dangerous for women then for men. So ladies, if you are or intend to use online dating, please be careful.

I thought the risks would be the same for both men and women. Could you explain what you mean?

I had tried online dating before I found my soulmate.  I did indeed meet some interesting genuine people.  Married one guy and that ended up pretty bad.  Bad judgement on my behalf.  With anything online dating is not different you've got to be smart, cautious and when a red flag goes up pay attention.

I would never. I have heard some horror stories.  Here's one similar my son was on facebook and he thought got a date he went to meet her. It turns out she was a hooker. Another friend of mine went to meet the person and turned out he was actually a she.

I like how opinion has changed on this over the course of my lifetime. I have been an advocate for it since a long time back. But then, I've always been more comfortable meeting people on the Internet. Now, it just seems like you're old and out of style if you're still against online dating (or online meetup type groups of any kind). I mean, when I'm interested in purchasing a product, I like to do my research online before I purchase. I don't understand why you wouldn't want to weed out the definite "no's" before investing your time in your top picks.

I'm all for it.  Getting to know someone a bit before actually meeting them is great.  Every date I've been on for over 13 years has started with an online chat.

I would be very careful about using the dating websites or in person.  There is good and bad everywhere .

I would rather get familiar (in person); my sister is into online dating, mainly because she doesn't want to be alone.  I think you have to be careful in these cases.  You have no idea who you are meeting online; he could be an ax murderer, to put it mildly. :o :o :o
