I have never had a goldfish as a pet. However, I did get 3 Mollys before. Two of them died fairly quickly, but the third one lived through A LOT. It even jumped out of the tank one day, got attacked by the cat, and managed to survive for quite a few more months after.

i had a goldfish named "finley" when i was little. he was around
for a few years!  i didn't have another fish until college, and
he was a beta. i got him at the spur of the moment.

never really had a goldfish as a pet, in fact I never had any pets ever. I just had toys. That is why I really don't care about pets. They seem a little to weird.

Personally, I do not have a gold fish but my sister bought two or three and they are getting bigger.

When startling kids off with pet responsible I choose to say get the fish first, but it is all up to the parent because they know their child.  Fish are so easy to take care of and I agree wit having them for pets.  When I was younger that was the only pet that I could have and many of times they were over feed.  Now today I know hat mom was replacing them while I was in school or gone for the weekend.

We always had fish when I was growing up. We had to buy the bigger goldfish because there were larger fish already in the tank. They seemed to last 3-5 years usually.

I am not a big fish fan. I think that cleaning up after them is an arduous process at best. The temperature of the water, levels of oxygen, and defecation removal must be monitored constantly. They are a fragile creature and the relationship is too one-sided. Dogs, for instance will come up and lick your hand, defecate outside, sleep in bed with you, excercise with you and protect you. They forgive you if you have had a hard day and listen when you need a sounding board. Second runner up is a cat. Cats will let you pet them and do their duty in a litter box.  Both creatures are capable of letting you know that they appreciate your efforts. Fish, to me, are more like plants-no affection and lots of maintenance.

I used to have a pet goldfish and some other fish, but they died fairly quickly. That kind of put me off from having anymore fish for a while. If I did have another pet fish it likely wouldn't be gold because someone at the pet shop told me goldfish aren't as clean as other fish. I think it's the way they manage their waste. I'm not sure if that contributes to a quicker death, but I likely would have a tropical fish if I have have it. Maybe a Japanese fighting fish.

I used to keep tropical fish, years ago.  Then I had a series of betas.  I think I stressed one out because he lived in my bathroom and would go into a defense display whenever I put my wet hair up in a towel.  Never had a goldfish per se.  :fish:
