Working after Retirement
« on: March 02, 2013, 05:50:31 am »
How many are working a job after retirement.  Is it for fun or out of necessity?

I can never figure this out. Why would you basically quite a good paying job to work a job that doen't pay much? :dontknow:

Some people are forced to retire.  Some retire and find they have to go back to work they probably can't get their old job back anyway and have to start at the bottom like everyone else.  Maybe some retire and are bored and like to work.  I wish I could retire now.

Well I have over 35 years until I reach retirement age and we will see if Social Security is even around than, but I do have a great aunt and great uncle who are still working in their 70's.

One more quick note:  I am really concerned about the financial future of my generation -- say people in their 20's and 30's who I dont think will have the same quality of life as the previous generations.  Look at the following points:

We are several years into a recession
The government just went into a Seqestration
High gas prices
No interest on money in the bank
The stock market is already so high and not likely to go much higher
Wages not keeping up with inflation ... If minimum wage kept up with inflation from when enacted it would be near $20 an hour and a good union wage is 2x minimum wage, and really how many young people are making $40 an hour

I am not planning on the government to provide anything for me in retirement years.  Unless Social Security and Medicare are majorly overhauled, the jig is going to be up soon and while we likely will be paying for the current debt that has been accumulated, those who are a long way from retirement now aren't likely to reap any of the benefits.

So I plan to be working at least part time in retirement years.

It's called a part-time job. That's kind of the point of retiring so that you don't need to work 40 hours a week.

I retired 10 years ago this month.  I stayed home 14 months after that but I could not make in on SS.  I went and put an appilcation  in at Walmart and go on as a people greeter.  I have been with them 9 years this coming June.  I am so thankful I am still able to work.  I will be 72 the 2th of this month.  I do not feel like I am that old.  The Good Lord has been good to me.  I have everyone has a wonderful Sunday and may God bless each of you and keep you safe.

I'll never retire because I thoroughly enjoy what I am doing now and Lord willing, I have goals for the future that really involve doing something (s) that I am passionate about. :) :) :)

I'm still several years from retirement, but if/when I do retire, it'll probably be because I'm forced out as I really like what I do now.  When I do retire, I can definitely see myself getting another job as I simply like to stay busy and would probably go stir crazy if I didn't have something to do.  Plus the more income I make, the less I'd have to dip into any retirement savings - keep that stored up for when I'm no longer able to work.

There is one HUGE factor you overlooked. Never in the history of the world has there been more opportunity available to anyone who wants to learn and grow through the mastery of the Internet and it's freely accessible earning potential. I retired over 12 years ago and have no intention of ever working for minimum wage in a dead end job.

I would like to work maybe 3 or 4 days a week part time, the problem that I find is my age. I am 60 and retired but, find it hard to get something decent that would pay around $15 an hour at my age. I guess I could go to work for about 8-9 an hour at a walmart or something on that category but, where I live I would have to drive 40 miles a day to get there, not really worth my time.

Some people haven't been so lucky. I had to go back to work in my 70's because of financial reasons on today's economy.  Didn't count on it, unfortunately  it just happened.  I'm just saying....

I know quite a lot of people that are working into their 70's and 80's.  My Dad is 81 this year and still goes into his job 3 days a week for 6 hours per day.  He is lucky he loves the job, and if he doesn't want to go he just lets them know.  We know several people who quit working and dropped dead within 6 months to a year.  If you enjoy it and are healthy enough I feel like you should continue to work.  You need somewhere to go and something to do, some people just are not cut out to putter around the house.

Do the math. At $10 an hour 3 days a week 6 hours a day, that's $180 a week or about $750 a month. Now take off the $4 a gallon for gas and extra clothes you need (not to mention other expenses) and you might come out with $400 a month after taxes. It's not that hard to beat that online without any extra expense at all.
