Norovirus
« on: February 03, 2013, 02:29:13 pm »
Has anyone had that nasty norovirus that is going around? I am scared to death of getting it!

"A new strain of norovirus that wreaks havoc on people’s stomachs is so vicious that it’s being called a “superbug” by doctors.

Though it was first identified in Australia, this norovirus — also called the Sydney strain — is quickly spreading across the United States."

"In an average year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 21 million Americans get the norovirus, with classic stomach flu symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.

Eight hundred die. Symptoms come on very suddenly, within hours after a person has been exposed to it.

Because no one has immunity to this new strain, more Americans — perhaps 50 percent more, the CDC says — could become violently ill.

While the flu is spread mostly in the air by sneezes and coughs and a person needs to breathe in as many as 1,000 virus particles to get sick, the norovirus is far more contagious. Just 18 norovirus particles can make a person sick.

The flu can last two to four hours on hard surfaces outside your body, but the norovirus can survive and remain infectious for weeks.

To keep the norovirus away, medical experts suggest cleaning the house with bleach, not just regular detergents. They also say that while hand sanitizers kill the flu virus, they are not effective at getting rid of the norovirus.

Medical experts suggest washing your hands with soap and water repeatedly to keep the norovirus off them."

You shouldn't worry that much, to be scard to death. Like some one wrote just keep your self clean, wash your hand often, and keep your house clean. I have seen a TV commercial that buy useing Lysol to sprays, and wipes will help to disinfect your home. I do this and up to right know I been ok. One thing that also helps is the flu shot. You might get the flu, but not too bad. Hope this helps ezzz your mind. ;)

Ever since seeing Contagion I do worry about mass outbreaks. The article does sound like something to be of big concern. I'm surprised assuming the numbers for Americans alone are true how come I don't remember hearing about this.

Wow, I hadn't even heard of that one yet.  Maybe I'll start wearing a mask over my nose and mouth like many Asians do when I fly overseas...

I know a stomach bug has been going around, but I wouldn't be overly worried about it. Even though some people can become very ill from any new strain of virus, the reality is that many viruses (like the flu virus) mutate into a new strain every year. And being overly clean is actually what creates these super bugs. For example, MRSA is a super bug that originated in hospitals because the clean conditions required there eliminated all but the most antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Just follow all the normal hand washing suggestions, eat healthy, try to keep plenty of sleep, and don't stress! Lack of sleep and high stress lower your immunity, leaving you more vulnerable to all those opportunistic little buggers you encounter every day. Keep healthy!

the couple that lives down the road from me ended up with this. they said it was the worst thing they had ever been through. at one point one of them thought he was going to die, he was vomiting so violently and frequently. They called the paramedics but decided against the emergency room. It was just awful. he ended up giving it to his wife. Their docs confirmed it was this virus and that they needed to clean their house with bleach to kill it!  My husband and i kept dropping stuff off on their front porch and then would leave. they would wait for us to leave so that there was no contact. thank goodness for pedialite. really helped them.
