Smoothies anyone?
« on: January 31, 2013, 05:58:16 am »
We recently started eating smoothies for breakfast.  After attempting a 3-day detox Dr. oz had on his site we became hooked on the energy provided.  Okay so we were only successful with the 3-day cleanse for 1 day. At least the smoothie habit settled in with not just me but my entire family.  We've made some unque combinations..adding Kale, pumpkin, apples, spinach, flax seeds, flavored yogurts, honey.  tofu... you name it we've bout tried it all...even cayenne pepper.

What are some unique things you've added to smoothies or combinations you thought would be intimidating and were surprised with the results?

I would like to be able to do that, but kale?  Yuck.  Maybe the flavor gets covered up, but I don't think I would like a smoothie that tasted like veggies.

We love Smoothies.. We drink one every morning, and now are including Vega.. Love that stuff.. Plus we add kale, fruit, nuts, whatever we can find every morning.. Ever get a chance, try out Wheatgrass.. and see how much energy that stuff gives you.. takes awhile to get past the taste, smells and taste like gras.. but the energy.. WoW..

I have added spinach to blended drinks and also beets. If you add an apple to vegetable blends it makes any vegetable into a great tasting smoothie.

Not a healthy thing I know, but I have found that Speedway gas station/convenience stores have awesome coffee smoothies.  I love them!
I strayed from your original thought, I know, but I could never get enough of those.

Kale... as long as I can get it blended well it's fine in smoothies.  However, most times it's so leafy still that you have chew the smoothie and I don't like that texture.  Spinach on the other hand is silky and blends up nicely.

Beets?  I've never ever used a beet.  How do you prepare it?  Does it get peeled?  Cooked?

wheatgrass...ugh! I've bought the pre-made smoothies in the produce department before with wheatgrass and your right.  WOW the energy.  But boo on taste...Lemon grass is certainly something I'd rather supplement in a vitamin form.

I've never heard of maca powder I'm going to have to research that one.

One of the coolest flavored smoothies we've come up with is...whipping cream, apple sauce, yoplait apple turnover yogurt, peeled apples, cinnamon, flax seed, coconut oil (final ingredient to add) coconut and almond milk, honey and spinach.

Smoothies are great. I usually do spinach, carrots, apple, banana, and frozen berries, then add some pom juice and flax.

"Detoxing" is  :bs: . Just eat healthy (or in a smoothie's case, drink) to be healthy.

I don't take the time or have the ingredients when I want them, I love them, but seldom make them...

Our smoothie kick has demoted the toaster into a cabinet to save on counter space.

Hi. Smoothies are nice. I can't say we make them with the most unique ingredients, but my mother used frozen strawberries, plain yogurt, a little honey (as a sweetner) and milk for a strawberry smoothie and she used fresh bananas with a banana smoothie. They were very good and made a nice dessert.  :D
