fights at work
« on: January 21, 2013, 05:12:19 pm »
I work in a window plant and have for 13 years. Today they hired a new man who also has a friend working there. Apparently they were upset with each other and got into a fist fight. The new guy was walked out by management but allowed to come back tomorrow. I am scared since he threatened to do some harm. Am I crazy by thinking my management needs to do more to protect us?

You are not wrong. There are labor laws that compel an employer to provide a safe workplace for everyone. Google this: "Labor Laws safe workplace" (and add the name of your state at the end) It will probably hook you up with your state's Department of Labor. Know your rights and make a phonr call if needed.

I would be very concerned to work in this workplace.  It seems even crazier that it was two friends that got into the physical fight.

Is management aware that threats were made or just knew there was a fight?

If the management knows there were threats made; he is responsible for taking every precaution to protect everyone who works there!  If he is not aware; tell him so!  It is your duty to speak up if others may be in harm's way! :dontknow:

I have felt tensions between people at work, but definitely not a fistfight. Luckily I feel generally safe with security clearance and guards, but acts like this would definitely lead to discipline if not removal.

This is a shame you do not comfortable at work, I think you need to complain about this.

They really let the guy come back after having a fist fight on his fist day on the job?  I'm shocked the guy would be let back on the property.   You can let a new employee go for any reason at all within the first 90 days of employment - that's why it's called a probation period.

Management knew there was a conflict and surprising enough both were not at work the next day. They thought it over and decided to suspend them for 3 days. Still they are both allowed to come back. Thanks all for the concern and advice.
