« on: May 03, 2009, 12:28:02 am »
we save money a couple of different ways
we save all our one dollar bills and change they come in handy in a bind
we make our own laundry soap
we only do laundry once a week
we use coupons
we buy food onsale
we quit buying bottle water and use our water from the fridge thing
we use old towels and clothes as rags instead of paper towels
we walk where ever we can
we sign up for samples just got a whole can of formula thanks walmart
what are your ideas

Hey...they used to call me cheap! I'd always say I'm "frugal".  Now, everyone is trying to be frugal!
Have an Aldis store? some people won't go into Aldis because they think it is too ghetto??? I go there first and get everything. Then I finish my grocery shopping at Walmart or Hannaford.
We now pack lunch for all 3 kids... school lunches were costing us $24.50/week.
No cable or dish here.
Queen of garage sales, thrift stores, and church sales.
chickens run free and we gather eggs - planting a garden (produce has become a luxury at the grocery store)!
We butcher venison and beef with friends and we all share. The roosters too- they get so mean if you have more than one.

My favorite thing is to make it a game-I clip coupons, then I head to my local Super K when they have their double coupon weekend.  I look for sales on the items I have coupons for and I stock up on whatever I can get a good deal on.  A lot of times (especially for new products), they have really good coupons and when you double them it's actually worth more than the product is worth so I get money back!!  I did that with new types of cat food, treats, and dog foods-they aren't kinds that I use for my animals, but I donate it to a local shelter.  A lot of times I'll end up making money on the donated items!!  Last weekend was a double coupon day-I ended up with over $150 worth of stuff for $67.

I get bottled water, but then I fill it with tap water over and over again-I end up using the same bottle for weeks sometimes!!  Saves a lot of cash and still allows for the convenience and portablity of the bottled water.
Have you guys heard of the guy that would take ketchup packets from fast food places and refill his own bottle at home?  I think that might be crossing the line LOL!!!

I stopped buying bottled water.  Have a filter on Fridge and kitchen spout.  I shop at Aldi's and Food 4 Less.  I have always used coupons.  Don't go to movies.  But if I find a very good sale at Jewel, I will shop there, but only rarely.

I cook dinner at my house 7 times a week it is cheaper then eating out all the time. If we do get a chance to go out and eat it is only once a month as a treat. I also stopped buying bottled water but am going to pick up a filter pitcher. We only turn up or heat past 72 on really cold days otherwise it is at 68 or off if we don't need it... it saves money on xcel bill. What we make extra is put in a separate account so we don't touch it so If something happens we have extra money... But finally living in a budget setting a budget and sticking to it really helps

this is the recipe i use for laundry soap it is from the show 18 kids and counting
4  Cups hot tap water
1  Fels-Naptha soap bar (i use ivory)
1  Cup Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

also for fabric Softener i use whit vinegar 1 cup per load it also helps remove orders like spoiled milk on clothes that have sat for awhile

Every day I take a walk. Often I see discarded cans and bottles, which I gather in a bag I always carry. I also pull them out of the trash where I work. Every week, I visit the recycle center at the Ralph's market where I get my groceries and redeem my recycle vouchers when I pay at the checkstand. This, along with coupons and markdowns, reduces my grocery bill to a fraction of what it would otherwise be! Also, I grow many of my fruits and vegetables at home.
