Colony on Mars
« on: January 15, 2013, 10:08:02 pm »
Was watching one of them science shows about space travel and they were explaining the problems that a group would have in colonizing a planet like Mars.  My question is would you be willing to move to another planet and what would it take to motivate you to do so?

Well, if the other planet was more earth like I definitely would consider going. After all, here, things are falling apart.

If they'd let me, I'd totally sign up to go.  I'm a very adventurous spirit, and would probably be able to handle the challenges that would come up on such an endeavor.  People who go on such missions need to have a mentality a combination of early pioneers combined with test pilots.  You know you'll be on your own, so if problems occur, you have to rely on yourself to get out of the jam.  Need to be strong to persevere, and be able to handle loneliness/isolation well.  Also you need to accept the possibility that you may not survive and be okay with facing death while trying to accomplish your mission.  If you are successful, many people will probably benefit, and even if you fail, they learn a lot so the next group will do better.

I definitely do NOT want to sign up for a trip to Mars, but apparently, a group of those adventurous types will be given the opportunity soon. In 2023, a company called Mars One will be sending humans on a one way trip to Mars.  A sustainable habitat will be waiting for them and they will spend the rest of their lives there.  Four people will be sent every two years thereafter.  An initial 40 people will be selected for the training team and 10 of them will be selected.  You can search "suicide mission to Mars" and read all about it!

I would not sign up to go to mars.  I am 71 years old and only 5 years ago I finally got up enough nerve to get on an airplane and flew to Fla.  I don't even like to get on an ladder.  The plane ride was awesome.  It was not as bad as I thought it would be.  Some day I would like to get on another plane if I had to be some where in a hurry.  Hope everyone has a wonderful day and May God bless each of you and keep you safe.

After watching various sci-fi movies, I am really leery of this idea. The movies about losing air by something breaking a dome make me pretty sure I do not want to try it.

Oh, I would definately go.  The only thing that I would really want to motivate me is that my son would be going too.

Every time I think about a colony on Mars I think about that Doctor Who episode when he went there by mistake. The colony's water filter failed and they were drinking Martian water and it turned them into crazy, water Martian people. I think I'll stay here.

I'm with you.  We already have a very pretty planet.  We need to take care of mother earth.   :peace:

I'm not that much of an explorer, but if we had no other choice but to relocate then I'd choose survival.

You'd have to have a lot of trust in technology to move there.  There's no air!  It was scary enough for those scientists years ago who were trapped in Antartica--remember that one doctor who treated herself for breast cancer?

Man can't even get colonization on earth right yet alone on another planet. The other planet would eventually turn our worse than earth or pretty close to it.
