How do you cheer yourself up?
« on: January 14, 2013, 05:58:02 pm »
A few times in my life when I have been beside myself with depression or worry, I sat down and watched hours of America's Funniest Home Videos.  It didn't solve my problems but I promise it takes me out of my own worries for a short period of time and makes me laugh no matte how bad I feel.

I will usually watch a funny movie I have seen before.  That way I know for sure I will laugh.  Also, I make a special effort with my hair and makeup--I figure if I look better, I will feel better  :)

doing something that makes you laugh like watching a funny show or movie is a good one. It works for me too. Sometimes a walk  a bike ride or a drive on a nice day just to see the beauty of the terrain or feel the sunshine or the breeze works for me too.
I have read that getting about ten minutes of sunlight each day will lift your mood, as well as boost your immune sytem. It is a good idea too

When I am sad, I listen to music or go for a walk.

All awesome suggestions.  My dad had some complicated open heart surgery yesterday and has been in the hospital since last Sunday.  They also found kidney cancer, but thank goodness it has not spread and they can remove the kidney later and think he will be cured.  There have been some nerve wrecking days and I remembered how the funny videos had helped in the past.  At night in his hospital room when I could not sleep I watched them on my laptop on Netflix until I would fall asleep.  I swear, laughter is the best medicine.

Also, I like the shopping and eating one too! lol.  However, I have been too upset to eat.  And about the sunshine.  I have been told that is true by a psychiatrist, so at least 10 minutes a day does help lift your spirits.  Thanks everyone for sharing your tips!

I cheer myself up with chocolate or engaging in certain biological functions.
I was lying in bed the other night, looking up at the stars, and thinking, "Where in the heck is my roof?"

I tell myself each morning that everything will go good if I stay positive and stay away from negative people. It works great.

Depends on what's getting me down.  Typically I'll clean or exercise which boosts my energy and gets rid of any anxious negative energy.  Sometimes I'll play the piano.  Sometimes I'll pop in a favorite adventure/sci-fi movie marathon and whisk myself away to another world for a short time.

I agree that Americas Funniest Home Videos is a good cure.  And it doesn't take a long time to watch an episode.  Getting my mind off myself and getting involved with watching (or helping) someone else is the best medicine.

Curl up on the couch after making a big forbidden chocolate sundae with lots of whip cream, or shop online.

Watching a really funny movie or TV show always makes me laugh and takes my mind off negative things that are going on.
