My laptop died a few days ago, so I was forced to purchase a new one.  I was really surprised how much further your money goes on laptops than it did 5 years ago.

My screen cracked on my mini laptop and I was super bummed, I looked on amazon for LED screens for my model and I got it in the mail, I figured out how take out the old screen and replace it with the new one... It was the coolest thing because I don't really know much about computers but I love learning how to fix stuff so I guess I had that lesson coming.

Oh yes.  Computers go by leaps and bounds over the time.  My first laptop was around $1000 and my sister just picked up about at $300.  If it weren't for the fact I need a specific graphics chip, getting my computer would be a breeze.  It's when you start specialize that you raise the price on a computer.

Yeah, in the computer world the average is 18 months before technology doubles.

I just got a Dell dual core laptop with 2Gb memory on Ebay for $21.50. It had to be listed for Parts Only, because it had no hard drive or CD/DVD drive, but it showed pictures that it booted up to the BIOS, so I took a chance. When it got here, I burned Browser Linux on a USB stick ($5 at Office Depot for 8Gb) and fired it up on that. Last night (while I was watching TV) I used it to surf 2,000 credits on traffic exchanges, with no worries that I would infect my Windows computer with any spyware or virus, because it was turned off. It did cost me another $21.50 for shipping, but I live in a rural area so it would have cost me that much in gas to go get one in the nearest city. Then I spent $12 for an A/C adapter, which brought my total expense up to $60 for the entire project. I am a happy camper with a sweet dedicated Internet machine.

I dumped a cup of coffee (third time) on my laptop and killed my keyboard.  I just bought this one 3 months ago.  But I am ready to buy another one soon,  I would love to have windows 8.

Congrats on the new laptop. Isn't nice when you get a good deal. The thing that amazes me is that not only are computers cheaper but they have more power. About the only thing that has gotten better and cost less these days.

Seems the network adapter on my laptop is acting up - I keep getting BSOD every 4-6 hours and have to reboot.  Doing everything I can to try to fix the issue as everywhere on the net indicates it's most likely a software issue, but a common one with my type of adapter.  If it's not a software issue, then it means the component is going bad and this one is integrated on the motherboard.   :(

As a precaution I've been trying to scope out a relatively cheap backup that I can maybe pick up.

I also decided that I do still need a workhorse for all the video editing/authoring and web design I do, so I'm going to try to take my old desktop and rebuilt it to upgrade it.  I've always wanted to build my own computer, and found some recommendations where I could rebuild it for under $500.  That will be my "big" project for next year...  Better start saving up my FC $$ now!

I can't even remember how much our first computer was. We got it when I was 10. I'm glad things have gone down in price since then.

Save your laptop for special occassions. Store what you need the most in your PC. Use public computers at your local libraries...this way you will extend the life of your PC.

Wonder if I can do that with my Dell Inspirion B130 with a Celeron M chip, used to have XP. Had XP, but I never created a backup DVD or backed it up on my external hard drive. It was "hacked" and the hard drive, fizzeled looking for online money ideas in the UK. If I could do the same thing then maybe later I could double boot it with Browser Liniux and XP.

No reason why not that I can see. The only requirement is that you can interrupt the boot process to make it boot from the USB device. If not, you can boot from a CD and do the same thing.

Despite the improvements of technology with devices like notebooks I still see periodic slowdown and issues. I multi task often and whenever there are application upgrades they also often have higher system requirements, so sometimes I don't actually see too big of improvements otherwise performance-wise (of course I also get more bells and whistles).

I built my computer from scratch a little more than two years ago, and it was top of the line, big graphics-gamer rig. Now I feel obsolete lol. I could upgrade a few things to get somewhat up to date, and I could get a little close, but I'm happy with what I have and although it might be obsolete in terms of today technology, it does not feel obsolete to me, for all activities I require. For all intents and purposes, it does more than I expected it to, and it has never gotten slower or given me problems. I'm still a happy camper.
