Let's talk music
« on: October 30, 2012, 11:14:05 am »
I think Nicki Minaj is one of those artists you either love or hate.  I actually love her because she raps and sings.  Usually a singer sacrifices one for the other and because she can do both, and does both that’s what makes her different and why she is so popular.  I mean that’s why I like her so much.

I don’t think Kesha can sing.  I am all about the words to a song and the way a singer sings them.  She just has this voice that’s like nails on a chalkboard.  However the way she drives her voice into the synthesizers is why I get why she’s so popular.  She totally needs those synths.  And she’s luck she came out now when a ‘club’ electronic sound is currently popular.  If she came out like five years before she did she probably would have been a one hit wonder and died.

I know there has always been pop in country but seriously I’ve noticed the latest songs to come out like Carrie Underwood’s blown away got me thinking I turned in to the wrong channel.  I get that pop is now more ‘electric’ but why is country going that way?  I don’t want synths and weird back up sounds in my country.  I guess that’s why I always say, ‘Thank God for George Strait.’

Sometimes I hear a song and think, “wow that would make a great remix.”  I don’t have the skill or equipment to do it myself so I look up the song on something like YouTube to see if a remix was done of that song.  A lot of times the songs I look up were the only problem is why do most remixes only use the chorus?  It’s like B.O.B’s Airplanes.  He features Haley Williams from Paramore to sing the chorus.  Now it’s B.O.B’s song, he sings the verse but what gets me made is dj’s remixed Airplane, but again only the chorus. They got some nerve tagging BOB when you don’t even hear him in the remix.  I hate when djs do that.  If your gonna remix a song it should be the whole song.  I get that it’s for a club floor and in that situation it’s all about the beat but still.  I think a true remix should be the whole song or not done at all.

I listen to a lot of music and do like a lot of songs but on a rare occasion I do find a song that I am so upset when it ends that I just have to listen to it more than once.  In country music it’s Shania Twain’s Any Man of Mine.  In pop it’s B.O.B’s airplanes.  In dance its Cascada’s Faded (the Dave Ramone Remix).  The last one to join the list is Maroon 5 with Payphone.  Just can’t get enough of that.

I have to admit I don’t go for ‘preachy’ songs.  While there is nothing wrong with a song with a message (like Jimmy eat World’s the Middle) and I always roll my eyes whenever a singer always cliché’s themselves with the, ‘oh I wanna change the world and make it better through my music’.  Like everyone hasn’t heard that a million and one times.  However there is the occasional ‘preachy’ song I do like.  Like Katy Perry’s Fireworks (especially any remix) and Pink.  Pink just has a great rough attitude like in F* Perfect or her latest I try.  She’s just the kind a person you totally want to raise your glass and agree by saying, ‘Yah, I’m weird and ugly.  Wanna make somethin’ of it?’  That’s the kind of preachy songs should be.  Attitude.  That’s why Pink is probably the only singer I listen to that preaches.  All about the way you spin it.

I can’t believe how many artists are out there that I found on YouTube.  I mean I constantly listen to the radio but I found a lot of artists I really like never made it to mainstream radio.  (Or if they did it was one hit and then they faded off).  I’m constantly on YouTube searching for new artists.  I like it more that the radio.  I listen to it more than the radio.  While sometimes I find it weird, a lot of times I hear an artist on YouTube before they make it big then get all excited because its like I listened to them before they went famous so I was along for the entire ride.

I've always been into rap and hip-hop type of music. Just recently though im finding myself listening to alot of old skool jamz and enjoyin this kinda music alot more. The lyrics and the beats just have so much more meaning and substance to them.

So watching the CMA’s and I really miss Vince Gill hosting.  When they had Brooks & Dunn it wasn’t too bad but I’m sorry while Brad Paisley’s songs are cute him with Carrie Underwood is just not funny.  I didn’t laugh at all this year and a slight chuckle last year.  Besides Carrie was replaced by Taylor Swift so I think they just gave her the hosting gig as like compinsation so she isn’t a ‘where is she now’ type of thing like Gretchen Willson.  I mean yeah she had Blow Away go to number one but really with Taylor Swift as a power house right now it’s like ‘Carrie who?’

Speaking of CMA’s I was upset the year Gretchen Willson got not only the Horizon award, which I could have lived with, but also female vocalist at the SAME award show.  She’s basically a one hit wonder and certainly ‘died’ after what the third album?  She’s a guest vocal on one of the new songs by Eric Church but really how could the CMA’s be that stupid?  I think female vocalist should be a woman whose been around at least five years so your sure they have staying power and not some stupid fade like Gretchen obviously was.

I think Tobey Keith was right that award shows like the CMA’s are nothing but a popularity contest.  I mean I sit there and think clearly it’s rigged.  Whoever is the most popular for that particular year wins the award in their category.  Not necessarily do they deserve the win (while personal taste I agree with some) but just that they were big that particualr year so CMA wants to award that before the following year they just aren’t so great.  I mean that’s why the last year faith hill was nominated for Female Vocalist against Carrie Underwood they made a big deal when Faith Hill was upset.  I believe she was upset not because she lost but because Carrie won.  Look at who the competition was that year.  You had Faith, Sara Evans, Martina McBride all women that were around for at least ten years.  Carrie was an up-in-coming nobody at the time.  You can’t tell me she is better than Ladies that were tried and true.  She just happened to have more hits that year then the rest so she won.  Now it’s all Taylor Swift.  I think that’s why Faith Hill is back to singing.  The country music fans (the true ones) always stick with people who aren’t fads.  That’s why it’s so good to see Miranda winning stuff.  Yes I think it’s cuz her hubby Blake Shelton is on The Voice, but still.  She was out before Carrie or Taylor and just got lost in the fad craze.  She isn’t a fad and remindes me of the old time ladies like Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and Dolly Parton that had to work their butts off to get where they were.

I don’t get the CMA’s this year.  How could they be that desperate that they were just throwing people into catagories that made one just say, ‘huh?’  I mean while Martina McBride is my favorite singer of all time, she didn’t have a real hit in a least two years and she was in the best female vocalist category.  I could have seen Reba McEntire because at least she went to number one with Turn on the Radio.  And Kelly Clarkson for female vocalist.  Really?  She’s not even country!  She had a number one duet with Jason Aldean and released Mr. Know it all as a country song which didn’t even break the top 15, if it even broke the top 20.  She’s pop.  What was the CMA people thinking?  And I know Montgomery Gentry still sings and release a song late last year which climbed the charts early this year.  Why didn’t they get a nomination?  And how the heck can you take some group like the Civil Wars that aren’t even mainstream country over Rascal Flatts?  That’s right.  With hits like Banjo, Easy, Come wake me up, and I won’t let go they get NO nominations but Civil wars whom I didn’t even hear of (and I’m a weekly check the charts freak) until the CMA’s gets a nod?  What the heck gives???

While I can applaud the CMA’s for giving Blake Shelton (for his new found mainstream popularity) the male vocalist and Entertainer of the Year award and Miranda Lambert (for being his wife) the female vocalist, I am glad that Hunter Hayes won the Horizon award.  I think he will be around for a while (which is what the award represents) and I think he was the most deserving out of all the rest that were in the category.  (While frankly I don’t think Thompson Square should have been in that category against him at all and was glad to see the husband and wife duo win the best Duo of the year award.)

While I know the CMA’s like all award shows are rigged, there are a few times I am happy to see certain people win.  Like I’m glad Tobey Keith won for best Video in Red Solo cup and Kenny Chesney with Tim McGraw for Rockstar for Vocal Event of the year.  And Hunter Hayes for Horizon award.
