flackle i never looked at it that way before will definitely think this over, thanks for the advice
I am surprised to hear you say this, most people don't listen to this sort of advice. If you are serious about saving money and being financially secure it will require patience and determination. You cannot dip into your savings for any reason. I would recommend having an emergency fund for things like disasters, disease, or income loss to be separate from your other funds. Have this money in
cash and have enough to pay your expenses for at least 3-6 months if not more. I would then have another pool of money you can use to invest. Invest in some form of passive income like dividends or rental property if you don't have the time for business. But if you save enough and can limit your expenses then I would suggest trying out a business idea. Its easy to get started online since there are so many ways to sell your items for free or next to nothing (Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, Etsy, and hundreds of others.) and you don't even have to make a website.
Have about 6 months of your expenses saved first (Even if you have to get rid of something, like cable TV or stop making car payments and get a beater. Saving usually requires some form of sacrifice.) This is important because at this rate if something happens in your life that requires you to spend money (car accident, disease, weather, fire, burglary, death of a loved one) when you are most emotionally vulnerable then the last thing you want to have to worry about is money. Its easy to get trapped in debt this way. Life will always happen, so having an emergency fund is key.
Once you have an emergency fund going and you are paying into it little by little take a small percentage of your income and put it into a business fund. If you want to start on eBay try some household things you no longer use. You'll not only get seed money for your business, but you'll also learn what sells and what doesn't sell.
I'm glad you are taking an interest into your finances, because if you save now you will be ready for the rest of your life.
