School Uniforms
« on: October 10, 2012, 06:41:12 pm »
I am livid!  First off, I think that the whole school uniform bit is crap.  Garland ISD claims that the choose uniforms because of gang relatedissues yet guess what their chosen unifrom colors are..red and blue (gang colors)  The school district that  am urretly in and have been for the last 4 years decided to adopt the uniform policy ths year.  It has caused more problems for me than you can imagine.  First, the company that I worked for for 5 years closed their doors one week before school started and left me unemployed, with no money to go uniform shopping.  My kids have tons of clothes but now none of htem are good enough for school!  I have been hand washing and hanging uniforms out to dry every day just to get by.  Now, my five year old was sent to the office because his shirt was untucked!  REALY???  He is five, and shouldn't you be more concerned about his ABC's than his shirt being tucked in.  At first, I thought that the schools were geting a kick-back off of uniform sales, but now I think that it is just an excuse to be lazy and get out of doing their job!  If they focus on my 5 yr old and te fact that he didn't perfectly tuck in his shirt after the restroom then they don't have to focus on the fact that half the kids are failing TASK and other necessary tests and being held back every year!

Well this situation seems like it could use some angry parents. Form a group of like-minded individuals, march into that school with the parents who disapprove and demand they stop this crap.

{... don't forget the torches and pitchforks; they add a certain pizazz to the march}

Well, you could imply that "satan" is really female, (some suspect such already), and start a petition to repeal school uniforms on the basis that requiring such conformity is not conducive to learning, nor does it have any impact on "gang colors", (if they're going to go that route, they can and do use hankerchiefs and gangsigns).  Worth a try?

Well you could always go the more easy route and just talk to the principle and say that this amount of policing is ridiculous and you're extremely offended your kid would receive such treatment over something so simple. Stuff like that can really get on the faculty. Especially if more than 1 person is complaining. Either way, couldn't hurt. Keep us all updated!

When my child was in public school, I did not mind the uniforms for reason's being that it was a form of unity as in no kid would look different from other kids. Kids and bullying are a big thing in schools. No kid should be bullied because his parent can not afford to dress him/her like the others. Nike shoes or these expensive clothing like Ralph Lauren or Gap, Old Navy etc. Plus for low income families it made a way for them to afford clothing and also if they have a few kids they can pass it along to younger siblings. My son came into public school when they were already doing uniforms so i did not have a problem. When we are at home or in public areas he is very well dressed even if I have on some jeans and a tshirt. My son is in home school now because of bullying so I know no parent want their child to be bullied, its the worse thing to happen to a kid at such a young age when they mind is learning different things, one of those things should not be cause he/she looks a certain way. Bad enough he was called a *bleep* and I and my dad had to explain to him what that was about.

I think it all depends on personal preference and age groups. Elementary school students probably shouldn't because learning fundamentals is top priority. Grades above would seem to take uniforms in a better way. I know that many teenagers worry about how they look and what they are going to wear. If everyone in the school wears the same stuff, there will be less distraction and judging.

I understand your comment and I agree on the part of less judging for high school students, but even there is a big problem. Even in elementary school there is judging because kids now days are learning bad manners and habits at a young age. You would be surprised of the knowledge of things that young children have now days. Im still surprised that young children are using race calling names when they should be just playing, having fun and not engage in things of this nature.

I grew up in parochial school and wore uniforms or twelve years.  It did keep things simple and kept costs down, but it didn't prevent me from being bullied.  :(

I can see where it'd be expensive if you were prepared for your kids to wear regular clothes, then the school decided to go with uniforms, but I should think they gave you warning.  :-

I disagree with the idea that little kids should wear street clothes and high schoolers should have uniforms.  Our middle schoolers are the most obnoxious kids in town.  That age seems to need to be reigned in.  >:(

I agree that a five year old not getting his shirt tucked in right isn't reason enough to send him to the principle.  He's still learning.  Making a little mistake like that doesn't deserve the shame of being sent out of class.  Sounds like he has a lousy teacher.  :bs:

I was never a fan of school uniforms myself, but they aren't going to change the policy no matter how much the parents hate it.   Most schools have a uniform donation program where people donate outgrown or unsued uniforms at the office - which are donated (annonymously) to families that can't afford the uniforms.   Call the school and ask about this.   Since your school just implimented the policy, they might not have them yet though.   You can try thrift stores as well.   You can find uniforms from a lot of  schools there, and if the school doesn't require their logo, only the right color, you can get the clothes pretty cheap.

If the school doesn't have any, and the thrift store is not an option, call the school board and explain the situation to them.   They should be able to provide at least two uniforms for your children.   They can't very well deny a child access to school because the family has fallen on hard times.   They must have a program to enable the kids to be allowed in class.

Just remember that whoever you are talking to did not write the policy and is doing their job for probably a lot less than they deserve.   If you remain calm and don't let your fury show, you should get results.   It's hard, but try not to yell at the person who answers the phone if they don't have an easy answer.
