how much pocket money?
« on: September 30, 2012, 05:42:30 pm »
I need some advice....my step daughter is now in college. Her accommodation (on campus), food, tuition, books and all learning necessities are paid for. How much should her dad give her as pocket money for a week? Her own mother gives $75 p/w and her dad did as well, until I complained...... I don't want to be the "wicked step-mom", but we are just scraping by here at home. So far, all my suggestions to her to get a part-time job have fallen on deaf ears.

I know when I went to college, the money I got from my parents went for room and board only.  I had to pay for my tuition, books and any other extras.  I was lucky enough to have gotten a couple scholarships that paid for most of my tuition and books, but for the rest of the school expenses and other "extras", I had to get a job.  I don't see it as unreasonable to expect that she get some kind of part time job for some extra spending money.  There are typically plenty of on campus jobs or could get a job at a fast food place, or department store.

Give her whatever you can, everything helps, and she's lucky to have it.

You're paying for everything and she still wants pocket money? Tell her to get a job! She should be happy that you're even paying her way through college. Once the money stops coming and dries up, you better bet she'll be thinking about getting a job.

I would give her what you can afford to give. I would also advise her to get a part time job if she feels she needs more money than what you can give

Thanks for all the replies and advice! I thought $600 per month (that is from both parents) is a bit much, especially as dad is also paying her car insurance and her phone bill! Now I have a better idea when the arguments start up again.  :BangHead:

You are doomed, if you don't match what the other parent is giving, you'll look bad... tell the college student to get a job if he/she want more cash and they can also go to FusionCash for a little extra... tell them you cannot afford to give them anymore...

Have a talk with her, let her know you care and want to do more but times are hard.
For now match the other parents, while offering a job as a form of assistance for times
you may not have it (don't let the job seem like a replacement for her pocket money.)

Why does she need $150 a week?  Most College students exist on a whole lot less and make do.  You can help when really necessary, but if she wants money, tell her to get a part time job.
