how many languages do you know?

I just heard a man say he was born Korean, lives in America and doesn't know the Korean language, his "native" tongue.

Years ago, I met a student who told me her boyfriend knew twelve languages!
I thought that was amazing.

It's very easy to forget a language if you don't use it! My father is Portuguese. He came to the US when he was 4-years-old and struggled with English through most of his education because he spoke Portuguese at home. Now that his parents are passed away and he doesn't have any necessity to use the language, he says he's forgotten quite a bit of it and couldn't hold a conversation very well.

As for me, I only speak English! I wish I could speak multiple languages, though!

I speak English and I did take quiet a bit of German in high school and college but I don't have any need for it in everyday life so I have forgotten most of what I learned. Sometimes I wish I had taken Spanish instead as I would be able to use the language quite often.

English is my primary language, even though I do know some French (took it in high school), and a little Russian. My dad studied Russian back in the day and even went to visit Russia some years ago.
